Explanatory factors of successful (or unsuccessful) relationship between tourism<br />

and sustainable development: The key factor of rather successful relationship<br />

among the partners in the area was the awareness that the resources are scarce<br />

and that the development has not only economic component.<br />

Relevant Indicators<br />

• the share of employment in tourism<br />

• the proportion of private rooms and apartments in the total number of the<br />

private houses<br />

• the expectations from tourism in the future<br />

• the attitude of local population towards the environment and the visitors.<br />

Lessons learned to be applied in other Mediterranean areas<br />

Three points should be stressed:<br />

• The question of information, education and involvement of local population<br />

when dealing with development questions in their region that relates to the<br />

use of land and natural and other resources like tourism do.<br />

• The destination management and marketing approach thus strengthening<br />

the links in the region.<br />

• The importance of quality of environment, quality of tourist facilities and<br />

services and quality of living of population. All these are factors for<br />

successful tourist development and satisfaction of tourists. This brings at<br />

the end also economic effects.<br />
