MIO-ECSDE Involvement - MIO-ECSDE is a well known Federation of
Mediterranean Non-Governmental Organisation for the
Environment and Sustainable Development, playing a very
active role in the promotion and implementation of projects,
researches and studies in the field of tourism and cultural
heritage, natural environment, environmental education and
awareness.
MIO-ECSDE is currently participating in a research
programme, the SUDECIR (Sustainable Development of
European Cities and Regions) with primary objective to
develop a (bottom-up) analytical concept and an associated
set of practical guidelines which, then applied to a welldefined
region with one or more population centres, will
produce for that region a clear and concrete path towards
sustainability.
MIO is particularly focusing on the tourism sector, in a case
study in the Island of Rhodes.
Challenge – Tourism is a multifaceted activity, with
ecological, economic and social impact in the Mediterranean
basin, but with emerging conflicts of use and intensive
pressures at the same time. Policy-action is needed, with a
more integrated approach, combining the necessary
institutional, financial and technological innovation, with
long-term perspectives and aspirations, in order to ensure
multisectorial co-ordination and integration of tools.
On the other hand, tourism can give ground for pilot projects
for monitoring and evaluation aiming to conserve the natural
resources and valuable ecosystems and promote biodiversity,
employment and functions to secure economic efficiency,
social equity and regeneration on the regions. Tourism can
easier mobilise a number of actors (stakeholders) in a spirit of
« shared responsibility » and result in more sustainable
management issues.
Initiatives – With regard to the process of the formulation
