2.10 Slovenian Adriatic coast *- SLOVENIA
Geographical framework
The Slovenian Adriatic coast is 46 km long on the western part of Slovenia,
bordering to Italy (Trieste) on north and to Croatia (Istria) on the south.
In some parts, the area could be extended to 20 km to hinterland, otherwise it is
mainly the strict coastal area. Along the coast, there are 3 big cities (region’s
capital: Koper). The population is 85 000 inhabitants, mainly living from all types
of economic activities (agriculture, fishing, wine production, industry, trade,
transport and tourism).
Tourism is developed the most in Portoro (Port of roses), with a tradition of more
than 100 years.
Attractivity factors
This is the most northern part of Adriatic and Mediterranean in the Central
Europe, having specific Mediterranean climate, mild and sunny weather
throughout a year, roman culture and heritage, excellent light cuisine, and long
tourist tradition and hospitality.
Besides, this region is easy to access by road, railway and air.
The region has high quality hotels and casino with 85 years of tradition, the region
has also a lot of medium quality accommodation facilities, camps, private rooms
and apartments.
Main parties
• Tourism business: hotels, casino and entertainment suppliers. Their impact
on the development policy in the region varies from one community to the
other (there are 3 communities), having the greatest impact in Portoro and
the smallest in Koper.
• Regional tourism association: Protour (which extends its influence also in
hinterland). This association has been constantly stressing the importance
of equilibrium of the economy-business, natural resources and the local
population. The association has been developing the destination
management and marketing, trying to spread it effects far in hinterland.
• The local people and environment protecting associations: probably the most
important factor. The construction of hotels and other facilities did not take
place so intensively thank to the protection of the land by the law, as there
is a lot of agriculture purpose land.
Market structure
• Slovenian coastal area represents approximately 1/3 of Slovenian tourism.
• 25 000 beds in all accommodation facilities and about 10 000 beds in hotels.
