Another project carried out by the Ministry of Tourism since<br />

1989 is “ Mediterranean Aegean Tourism Infrastructure and<br />

Coastal Zone Management Project ”. Covering 4000 km of<br />

coastline and 130 settlements aiming to complete the<br />

infrastuctural needs concerning water supply waste water and<br />

solid waste collection and disposal.<br />

Feasibility studies are completed with the World Bank grant.<br />

A new approach for CZM is defined and total estimated coast is<br />

around 2.5 billion US dollars.<br />

The implementation started in 6 high priority areas. Financial<br />

resources are limited. In order to be able to apply “ user pay ”<br />

principle some laws have to be adjusted.<br />

To prevent and discourage the waste discharge from the<br />

vessels, Ministry of Tourism financed a regular air patrol witch<br />

worked in collaboration with the coastguard organisation.<br />

To encourage and reward environmentally conscious facilities,<br />

an anchor symbol is awarded to successfully managed marinas,<br />

a dolphin for yachts and a pine tree for accommodation<br />

facilities.<br />

Ministry of tourism works in co-operation with Ministries of<br />

Culture and Forestry as well as Administrations for<br />

restoration and evaluation of historic building and National<br />

Parks and Natural Sites.<br />

The revitalisation of the historical “ Silk Road ”, as a route of<br />

international peace and fraternity is in the implementation<br />

program of the Ministry of Tourism.<br />

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA): an integrated<br />

system for EIA was approved by the Council of Ministers in<br />

1991.The various laws related to the environment provide the<br />

responsible authorities with the power to apply the concept by<br />

requiring such a study prior to the granting of a permit or<br />

allowing registration.<br />

Environmental fiscal instruments: current taxes and charges<br />

are wide-ranging, from national to municipal taxes and<br />

charges on utilities and services but they have not been<br />

developed for the protection of the environment but for revenue<br />

raising and cost recovery.<br />

A special scheme for providing grants to manufacturing<br />

industries to assist them comply with environmental<br />

standards was introduced, whereas a similar scheme is being<br />

prepared for mines and quarries.<br />

Basic suggestions have been incorporated in the draft Bill for<br />

the Law for the Environment which, inter alia, provides for the<br />

establishment of an Environment Fund, assessment of the<br />
