and reaching a consensus of a sustainable development plan,
MIO’s methodological innovation is the incorporation, from
the very beginning, of the « expectations » and of the
subjective assessments and aspirations of the involved actors
and stakeholders as well as of the objectives and scientific
criteria and indicators of « sustainability » .
The process is very likely to reach consensus among these
stakeholders and therefore be implemented, through
voluntary or negotiated agreements, especially by the
dominating the sector hoteliers and entrepreneurs. Public
participation and partnership, open dialogue, exchange of
information and raising awareness are some more key-points.
Partners - The innovative approach that MIO has introduced
in Rhodes is based on lengthy dialogues with all kinds of
stakeholders, including the government, the local population
and NGOs, the private sector (hoteliers), The Chamber of
commerce, the local municipalities, universities, institutions,
research centres, the tour-operators, etc.
Evaluation - It is widely accepted that partnership is a bundle
of compromise arrangements of mutually binding nature
which balance and fulfil better than other relevant
alternatives the interest of all parties and on which
agreement was reached through the dialogue.
The participation in the dialogue of the largest possible
numbers of parties concerned is though to increase the
options of stability and secure sustainability of these
agreements.
EOAEN Involvement - The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of
Dodecanese has shown a long history as far as is concerned
the development of tourism in the region. Our final and very
successful activity is the construction of a general model of
sustainable tourism development. The research program has
financed the by the European Community (DG-XXIII).
Challenge - For our region which produces only tourist
services, sustainable tourism development is identical to
sustainable development. Our economic future depends
mainly on our ability to plan carefully the growth of tourism
taking into account the environmental restrictions as well as
demand and supply conditions.
Initiatives – Our organisation carries out studies and
participates in Committees as an advisory member. Because
tourism is a multifactor activity, we have established a new
organisation where the main members are, apart from the
Chamber of Commerce, the Union of Hoteliers and local
authorities. This organisation uses local and national
resources so that to pursue policy measures which promote
