Large scale involvement of local people could not be realised because they were not
familiar with such an activity and because public authority did not give special
attention to educate these people.
A direct flow of fruits and vegetables from local farmers to touristic facilities was
not possible because of the domination of Antalya food stock exchange.
Relevant indicators
The existing landscape is generally protected despite some excessive construction
in certain points.
Local people adapted new commercial activities related to tourism besides keeping
their agricultural duties and they achieved higher living and cultural standards.
Lessons learned to be applied in other Mediterranean areas
To involve regional Members of Parliament and to get their support, to find a
consensus between the MP’s of different political parties is a MUST to avoid the
negative impact from the other parties.
Well-programmed Public Relation Activities are very important to get the support
of local people.
Local people have to be involved in the planning decisions.
An office for technical and financial guidance and advisory services has to be
created to orient the local investment and business potential.
Criteria to choose this region
The project is a good example of action planning.
It is the only integrated tourism Development Project of the country.
The project area has very specific features.
The author had the opportunity to follow very closely all the phases of the project
from the very beginning till the present, including the first phase of
implementation in Antalya in the years 1978-1980 to approval of encouragement
licences of hotels in State Planning Organisation.
A success, a partial success or a failure in terms of local sustainable development:
the project is a successful one in terms of sustainable development and it could be
more successful if certain measures could be taken and some negative factors could
be avoided.
