Results of the questionnaires
the Union of Hoteliers of Rhodes and the Greek Union of
Commercial Chambers (January 1998). Stakeholders and
actors relevant and competent in the issues of tourism and
regional development (from the Periphery, Prefecture
Municipality, Commercial Chambers, Hoteliers, Technical
Chamber, Universities, National Tourism Organisation,
NGOs, etc.), were gathered and discussed about the
SUDECIR project and the methodology developed by MIO-
ECSDE that should lead to a sustainable tourism
development in the region. The stakeholders were also
informed on a series of sustainability criteria that are used
to check up on the orientation of the region's development
(which in the case of Rhodes showed unsustainable trends).
The participants accepted the criteria in principle and thus
everybody agreed that specific actions had to be initiated in
order to reorient tourism towards more sustainable patterns
accepting among other things the carrying capacity as an
important guideline. During the very interesting discussion
that followed a very important step towards building
consensus was accomplished. In a second stage MIO-
ECSDE, with everybody's agreement, will organise another
workshop in Rhodes (in May I998) where it will present a
more concrete set of recommendations for a Sustainability
Plan, integrating, also, to the feasible extent, the
recommendations of the « Integrated Planning Study for the
Island of Rhodes » (CAMP, MAP/UNEP).
Following the suggested methodology it is likely to reach
consensus among the various actors and stakeholders and a
Sustainability Plan to be adopted and implemented, through
« voluntary » or « negotiated » sectorial agreements.
EOAEN EOAEN is a type of organisation that only offers advice to
the government as well to our members. Our advice, studies
and suggestions are often taken into account for formation
of the tourism policy.
In practical terms, our main contribution is to persuade the
local authorities as well as our members that the
sustainable tourism development is something that has to
be pursued in common.
The organisation and operation of this is very important for
any city and we suggest that the model for local operation
can be applied to other tourist destinations in the
Mediterranean region.
Med-Cities
The Med-Cities network is promoting the environment
protection and preservation to the cities members of the
network by carrying out environmental audits, action plans
and financing concrete actions for environment protection.
The examples of Limassol-Cyprus and Silifke-Turkey will be
given as examples.
