Cost of living in Nunavik
It would be superfluous to say that the cost of living in Nunavik
is very high and it is difficult for families in Nunavik to make
ends meet at the end of each month. Following repeated requests
by Makivik, the premier of Quebec finally consented to
the creation of a working group that was first mandated to list
the measures and programs implemented to reduce the cost of
living in Nunavik, then to
assess their effectiveness
and efficiency. The working
group was also mandated
to make recommendations
about the future of these
measures and programs.
The creation of the
working group on the
reduction of the cost of
living in Nunavik was the
culmination of a long series
of events. Indeed, the
Government of Quebec
and the Inuit were already
working for more than 15
years on the reduction of the cost of living in Nunavik. The remoteness
of our communities, the absence of roads and the harsh
climate has always, and are still, considerably impacting the cost
of goods and services in the North (such as fuel, freight, etc.).

Il serait superfétatoire d’affirmer que le coût de la vie au Nunavik
est très élevé et qu’il ne permet que difficilement aux familles
du Nunavik de joindre les deux bouts chaque mois. À la suite de
demandes répétées de Makivik, le premier ministre du Québec
consentait finalement à la création d’un groupe de travail devant
dans un premier temps dresser la liste des mesures et programmes
mis sur pied pour réduire le
coût de la vie au Nunavik,
puis faire le bilan de leur
efficience. et de leur
efficacité. Le groupe de
travail avait également
pour mandat de formuler
des recommandations
pour l’avenir de ces
mesures et programmes.
La création du groupe
de travail sur la réduction
du coût de la vie au
Nunavik a été l’aboutissement
d’une longue suite
d’événements. En effet, le
gouvernement du Québec et les Inuits travaillaient déjà depuis
plus de 15 ans à la réduction du coût de la vie au Nunavik.
L’éloignement des villages, l’absence de routes ainsi que la
rigueur climatique alourdissaient alors et alourdissent toujours
