At the end of July, Air Canada discontinued service on the
Montreal-Ottawa-Iqaluit route. This is resulting in improved
passenger loads and yields on this market.
Service between Winnipeg - Rankin Inlet increased to seven
days a week, which has proven to be a successful schedule enhancement
for this growing market. Kivalliq frequency has been
increased on Baker Lake and Arviat, providing increased and
improved connections for our customers.
The Yellowknife market continues to be competitive, but First
Air’s strong community presence and northern route network
has resulted in a stable market. Our award for Best Community
Support Business from the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce
confirms First Air’s continued leadership in the West.
In Kuujjuaq, the tour operator business was down substantially
from last year and passenger volume was accommodated
on one flight per day. The extra frequency of flights in previous
years was not required.
The Nunavut Department of Health and Social Services contract
for medical travel on schedule airlines was awarded. There
was a four-month delay in awarding the contract that had a
negative impact on our financial results. First Air was awarded
a significant portion of Kitikmeot travel to Edmonton and half of
the Kivalliq region travel, which represents a significant source of
new revenue. We also retained a large share of Qikiqtani markets,
including the Ottawa-Iqaluit market. We were disappointed that
approximately half of the travel to Resolute Bay and Arctic Bay
was given to a competitor who has yet to travel that market.
