Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami
This year marked a turning point in the history of Inuit Tapiriit
Kanatami in that 40 years ago, a remarkable group of men and
women came together in Ottawa to bring Inuit issues to the
national stage. On November 1, 2011, the organization that they
launched celebrated 40 years of advocacy and achievement with
a conference in Ottawa examining our history and our future.
Our 40th anniversary year began on a similarly festive note,
with the second annual A Taste of the Arctic at the National Gallery
of Canada. Elisapie Isaac and ArtCirq performed at the Gallery’s
Great Hall, while Michaëlle Jean, the former Governor General
of Canada, attended as the evening’s special guest.
The event was also an opportunity to celebrate the life of
Jose Kusugak, who passed away in Rankin Inlet during the first
weeks of January. Days after the gala, we held a more sombre
memorial in Ottawa for Jose, to pay our respects to his wife Nellie
and other family members who were able to attend.
In February, the Inuit Summit on Resource Development
in Ottawa gave Inuit organizations the green light to draft A
Circumpolar Inuit Declaration on Resource Development Principles
in Inuit Nunaat. The declaration was signed in Nuuk, Greenland,
by international Inuit leaders who were gathered in advance of
an Arctic Council ministerial meeting.
In June the National Committee on Inuit Education released
First Canadians, Canadians First: The National Strategy on Inuit
Education during an afternoon event on Parliament Hill, which
Inuit also celebrated. The Strategy focuses on three core areas:

Cette année a marqué une étape importante dans l’histoire
de l’ITK. Il y a 40 ans, un groupe d’hommes et de femmes
remarquables s’est réuni à Ottawa pour souligner les
préoccupations des Inuits sur la scène nationale. Le 1 er novembre
2011, l’organisation qu’ils ont mise sur pied a célébré 40 ans de
défense des intérêts et des réalisations des Inuits dans le cadre
d’une conférence à Ottawa examinant leur histoire et leur avenir.
Le 40 e anniversaire a commencé sur une note festive avec la
tenue de la deuxième célébration annuelle Un aperçu de l’Arctique
au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada. Michaëlle Jean, ancienne
gouverneure générale du Canada, assistait à la soirée à titre
d’invitée d’honneur, alors qu’Elisapie Isaac et ArtCirq ont offert
des prestations dans le Grand Hall du Musée.
L’événement a permis de célébrer la vie de Jose Kusugak,
décédé à Rankin Inlet en janvier 2011. Quelques jours après
le gala, une cérémonie tenue à Ottawa en l’honneur de Jose a
permis de rendre hommage à son épouse Nellie et aux membres
de la famille présents.
L’ITK a participé au Sommet des leaders inuits sur le développement
des ressources qui a eu lieu en février 2011. Cette
activité, organisée à Ottawa, a donné le feu vert aux organisations
inuites pour poursuivre la déclaration intitulée A Circumpolar
Inuit Declaration on Resource Development Principles in Inuit
Nunaat (Déclaration des Inuits circumpolaires sur des principes
de développement des ressources dans le Nunaat inuit), qui a été
signée à Nuuk, au Groenland, en mai 2011 par les leaders inuits
