Hockey sessions are provided during the
evenings as opposed to during school hours.
This way, it is possible to work with children
of all ages after school hours. Nunavik leaders
agree that having hockey during the evenings
is the right approach and has a direct
effect on crime prevention if it is done well
by the people involved at the local level.
During the 2010-2011 season, there were
840 children from almost all of the Nunavik
communities registered on our website to
let the promoter of the program know that
they want to be involved. Not every Nunavik
community registered students.
During the spring 2011, about 450 students
from all 14 Nunavik communities
participated for the second time in regional
minor hockey tournaments established under
the program. Over 175 students also participated in the
Nunavik Youth Hockey Development Program’s “Select” league
over the last two seasons, and almost half of those went on to
represent Nunavik in major hockey tournaments down south.
Among the 840 students who registered, some were doing
well and others experienced more difficulty in school. Some of
these students followed the Individualized Paths for Learning
classes while others dropped out. Students that drop out can also
participate in the program under the supervision of Nunavik Youth
Hockey Development Program staff if they make a commitment
