A meeting of the forum was held on September 19 at the
Makivik’s branch office down in Montreal. Current issues such as
the funding of landholding corporations, various agreements between
Canada and Makivik and the Kativik Regional Government,
health care coverage and the sled dog slaughter were discussed,
as well as specific issues relating to a hoped-for Nunavik regional
government the wish of an Inuktittut translation of the James
Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement.
It is true that the forum had suspended its work. However, a
technical table, composed of representatives from Makivik and
the Government of Canada, has been created with the mandate
to prepare technical aspects of the various issues brought to the
agenda of the forum. The objective of the table is to resolve at
a technical level as many issues as possible without having to
resort to political intervention.
To this date, although new, the technical table has already
resolved several problems, and contributed to the smooth operation
of the forum, which is operating under the guidance
and leadership of our vice-president of economic development,
Michael Gordon.
Une rencontre du Forum s’est tenue le 19 septembre dernier
aux bureaux de Makivik à Montréal. Des dossiers courants
comme le financement des corporations foncières, les diverses
ententes entre le Canada et Makivik et l’Administration régionale
Kativik, la couverture des soins de santé et l’abattage des chiens
de traîneaux, mais aussi des dossiers spécifiques relatifs à un
éventuel gouvernement régional du Nunavik et à la traduction
souhaitée en inuktitut de la Convention de la Baie-James et du
Nord québécois ont fait l’objet de discussions.
Il est vrai que le forum avait suspendu ses travaux. Toutefois,
une table technique, formée de représentants de Makivik et du
gouvernement du Canada, a été créée. Cette table a pour mandat
de préparer les aspects techniques des dossiers qui seront
discutés lors de rencontres du forum, et de voir s’il est possible
de régler les questions en litige à un niveau technique sans qu’il
soit nécessaire de recourir à une intervention politique.
À ce jour, bien que nouvelle, la table technique a déjà permis
à quelques reprises de dénouer différentes impasses, et fait en
sorte que les travaux du forum se déroulent plus rondement. Les
travaux du Forum s’exécutent sous la gouverne et le leadership
de Michael Gordon, notre vice-président responsable du
développement économique.
