Closer to home, we take part in various research projects to
determine whether there is a viable shrimp supply in the Ungava
Bay and Hudson Straight. Previous research has yielded positive
results so that Makivik and Nunavut have to come to a sharing
arrangement for this resource.
Makivik, KRG and Canadian and Quebec government officials
met to examine solutions to outstanding issues such as identifying
alternative funding sources for the landholding corporations;
facilitating KRG’s renewal of manpower and training contracts
from the Canadian government; easing the plight of southernbased
Inuit for non-insured medical benefits; and obtaining an
apology and compensation from the Canadian government for
dog slaughters.
We appreciate all the help given to our staff and art students
by the population of Akulivik during our annual art workshops
in November 2011. Thanks you for helping to make this — the
tenth year of the program — such a success.
We have a brand new tanning facility to work on furs and
skins harvested in Nunavik. The proper equipment has been
moved to the building and operations began in recent months.
Our hunters now have better access to a facility that is capable
of processing these products for domestic and commercial use.
My department is also monitoring two concurrent Quebec
government pre-feasibility studies to determine whether greater
research should be done for a road link from the South to
Kuujjuaraapik and to Kuujjuaq. It also includes the possibility of
a deep-sea port for Kuujjuaraapik. The pre-feasibility study for
Kuujjuaq is completed and presentations will be made to the
local municipality and landholding corporation.
We work with the National Economic Development Committee
for Inuit Nunangat. We are carefully watching what Aboriginal

Les représentants de Makivik, de l’ARK et des gouvernements
fédéral et provincial se sont réunis pour discuter d’enjeux non
résolus, comme des sources de financement récurrent pour les
corporations foncières, le renouvellement de l’entente sur la
formation et la main-d’œuvre de l’ARK, l’amélioration du programme
de remboursement des frais médicaux non couverts
par les régimes d’assurances pour les Inuit vivant à l’extérieur du
Nunavik, l’obtention d’excuses et le paiement d’une indemnité
du gouvernement canadien pour l’abattage des chiens.
Je tiens à souligner l’aide offerte par la population d’Akulivik
à notre personnel et aux artistes participants lors des ateliers des
métiers d’art tenus en novembre 2011. Je la remercie de sa contribution
au franc succès de cette dixième édition du programme.
Nous avons aménagé un tout nouvel atelier pour le tannage
des fourrures récoltées au Nunavik. Grâce à des installations adéquates,
les chasseurs peuvent préparer plus facilement les peaux
et fourrures destinées à un usage domestique et commercial.
Mon service surveille aussi deux études de préfaisabilité
menées par le gouvernement québécois pour la construction
d’une route reliant le sud de la province à Kuujjuaraapik et à
Kuujjuaq où la construction d’un port en eau profonde est aussi
à l’étude. Les résultats de l’étude de préfaisabilité pour Kuujjuaq
