Beluga sample collection
The beluga-harvesting season does not occur within a Makivik
fiscal year, which this publication covers, so the totals reported
here may not reflect the entire hunt. We received 68 beluga kits
from Nunavik hunters in the 2010 season. The beluga teeth were
aged and the dataset and samples for diet and genetic stock
identity have been sent to Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Photos
will be taken of the teeth and sent to hunters in March 2012.
A Nunavik Research Centre biologist and wildlife technician
attended an international beluga age-determination workshop
in November 2011, for which we prepared some very valuable
beluga teeth scans.
Collecte d’échantillons de béluga
La saison de chasse au béluga ne se déroule pas entièrement
au cours de l’exercice couvert par le rapport annuel, par
conséquent nos données sont possiblement incomplètes. Les
chasseurs du Nunavik ont expédié 68 trousses d’échantillons
au CRN en 2010. Nous avons établi l’âge des dents de béluga et
expédié les données et les échantillons concernant l’alimentation
et l’identité génétique à Pêches et Océans Canada. Des photos
des dents seront transmises aux chasseurs en mars 2012.
Un biologiste et un technicien de la faune du CRN ont participé
à un atelier international portant sur la détermination de
l’âge des bélugas tenu en novembre 2011 où ils ont présenté
d’intéressantes images numérisées de dents de bélugas.
