The year 2011 brought significant changes to the NEAS shipping
group. Not only did Makivik significantly increase its ownership
interest in NEAS and affiliates, but a new company, called Nunavik
Eastern Arctic Shipping, in which Makivik holds a 60% interest,
has also been created to serve the Inuit communities of Nunavik.
Makivik now owns 50% of NEAS Inc., Transport Qamutik (MV
Qamutik), Transport Umialarik (MV Umiavut), Transport Inukshuk
(MV Avataq), and 60% of Nunavik Eastern Arctic Shipping. NEAS
Inc. is also the part owner of Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping,
which provides services to communities across Nunavut with
the help of our local partners.
The 2011 shipping season was very successful for the NEAS
group, breaking another company record by delivering in excess
of 190,000 cubic metres of cargo to 46 community and
commercial destinations. In total our four vessels completed 13
sailings and made a record 88 stops during the shipping season
without any operational problems. NEAS again navigated the
Northwest Passage to service several Kitikmeot communities
returning through the Fury Hecla Straight that was ice-free for
a record six-week period this year. The MV Umiavut, MV Aivik and
MV Avataq are all laid up in Montreal while the MV Qamutik has
been reflagged and is now working on the international market.
NEAS remains committed to employment and training opportunities
and this year a total of nine Inuit worked onboard the
vessels. Many received additional training by NEAS for promotion
to checkers, wheelsmen or tugboat operators. NEAS will be
Nunavik. Makivik détient donc une participation de 50 % dans
NEAS Inc., Transport Qamutik (MV Qamutik), Transport Umialarik
