„The Big Lebowski“ ist seit 15 Jahren Kult;<br />
seit bald 30 Jahren gehören Joel und Ethan<br />
Coen zu den überragenden Filmautoren der<br />
Gegenwart. Lustvoll dargebotene Sprachspiele<br />
in filmischem Kontext sind ihre Spezialität;<br />
ihr Spektrum reicht von Komödie über<br />
Film noir bis zu Krimi und Alltagsdrama – oft<br />
in bunter Mischung im selben Film. Als<br />
genaue Beobachter von Situationen und<br />
Milieus geben die Brüder in ihren Filmen<br />
detailgetreue Beschreibungen amerikanischer<br />
Lebensräume in Stadt und Land und der Menschen,<br />
die sie bewohnen: die Ethnographie<br />
einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft, mit Kommunikationsversuchen<br />
zwischen Wortschwall<br />
und Sprachlosigkeit, eines Alltagslebens zwischen<br />
Orientierungslosigkeit und Zielstrebigkeit,<br />
die oft ins Chaos führt. Anhand von<br />
Filmzitaten wird im Seminar Coen Country<br />
und dessen Bewohner erkundet: Lebowski<br />
und andere Söhne der Pioniere. Begleitend<br />
findet in der Schauburg eine Retrospektive<br />
der Filme von Joel & Ethan Coen statt, sowie<br />
ein Filmexploratorium im ZKM am 15.01.2014.<br />
- Empfohlen für Studierende aller Fachrichtungen<br />
und Semester; Leistungsnachweise<br />
können erworben werden; Gäste willkommen<br />
soweit Plätze vorhanden.<br />

Germans, who plan to study and work in the<br />
USA, will benefit greatly from this seminar.<br />
The premise of this workshop is simple:<br />
understanding your culture and your own<br />
“mental software” is a prerequisite to understanding<br />
other cultures — in this particular<br />
course, American ways and habits. By first<br />
clarifying the (un-conscious) behavioral patterns<br />
of the Germans and then comparing<br />
them with Americans, the participant attains<br />
an increased cultural awareness, leading to<br />
more effective intercultural communications.<br />
Topics include:<br />
• Examining the term ‘culture’<br />
• Overcoming ethnocentrism<br />
• Discovering German and American cultural<br />
values<br />
• Contrasting German and American communication<br />
styles<br />
• Negotiating and resolving German-American<br />
conflicts<br />
• Becoming aware of the different stages of<br />
intercultural competence<br />
