The majority of the phenomena uncovered
this year belonged to the Middle
Bronze Age Vatya culture. The distribution
of the features found on the sand ridge in
the northern part of the excavation territory
shows that only the southern border
of the single-layered, loosely structured
settlement was recovered. In the northern
part of the excavation territory, the
pits were relatively densely distributed. A
shallow trench separated this unit from
the rest of the loosely distributed features
(Fig. 3). This suggests that only a small
section of the settlement has been unearthed.
The larger part may well extend
under the houses on Vezér and Miskolci
streets. A wide ditch broken by an entrance
bordered the settlement to the south
(Fig. 4). A few large fragments of stone lay
scattered on its bottom (Fig. 5). The majority
of the recovered features comprised
regularly round refuse pits. The three pits
unearthed side by side at the northern
edge of the trench deserve mention.
They contained three intact cups (Fig. 6).
The Bronze Age features contained the
characteristic household ceramics of the
Middle Bronze Age (2000–1500 BC) Vatya
culture (handled cups, bowl and pot fragments).
The analogues to the cups can
be found among the ceramic fi nds of the
late phase of the Vatya culture (KOVÁCS
1978). The knob ornament appearing on
one of the cups and on a few fragments
(KOVÁCS 1984, Taf. LXII, 1–10) date
the settlement to a late phase of the Vatya
culture,the Koszider horizon.
The fortifi cation of the settlements using
ramparts and ditches is characteristic
of the Middle Bronze Age. These fortifi ed
settlements are obvious evidences of the
