KALICZ 1991 – Kalicz N.: Beiträge zur
Kenntnis der Kupferzeit im ungarischen
In the western part of trench 2 was a
large dark spot was observed in the deepest
part of the unearthed area (closer to the
stream). The spot was divided into segments
leaving a number of section walls.
The intersecting pits from a pit complex
appeared gradually during cleaning, while
the central part of the feature deepened
into a rounded quadrangular shape
(Fig. 9). Beside and above the deeper part,
the discolourations from postholes were
observed. It is likely that the sunken feature
was protected by some kind of a roof. The
function of the feature is uncertain. It was
probably not a dwelling but an out-building
of some sort. Many shards, animal
bones and daub fragments (the latter also
implying the presence of a construction)
were recovered from the pit complex.
The bowls of strongly everted rims,
the vertical ribs on the walls of the vessels
and the conical spindle whorls date
the feature to the so-called Proto-Boleraz
horizon which ended the Middle Copper
Age period (HORVÁTH 1990; KALICZ
1991; HORVÁTH–SZILAS–ENDRŐDI–
HORVÁTH 2003). The smaller round
pits with cylindrical walls unearthed
in trenches 1 and 2 contained a small
number of shards and animal bones can
be grouped within the same horizon. The
excavations conducted on large surfaces in
recent years have resulted in the increase
of the number of the sites from the Proto-Boleraz
horizon known in the Capital
(Dunakeszi-Székesdűlő: HORVÁTH–
SZILAS–ENDRŐDI–HORVÁTH 2003).
The Budapest XI, Kőérberek-Tóváros site
(in this volume), and the fragment of a
settlement unearthed on the border between
Rákoscsaba and Pécel, the excavation
of which will be continued next year,
belong among these sites.
