<strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City College offers a program for preparation for the CompTIA<br />

A+ Computer Systems certificate, and industry standard certification for those<br />

who work with computer hardware and systems software. Upon completing<br />

this short program, the student is fully prepared to sit for the CompTIA A+<br />

Certification Examination. The CompTIA A+ Examination itself is administered<br />

outside of <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City College. The Mathematics Department<br />

will issue a completion certificate upon application by the student with the<br />

successful completion of the following courses. Students must receive a<br />

satisfactory grade or better to meet certificate requirements.<br />

Introduction to Computer for Technicians<br />

4 UNITS - (CSU)<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

No UC credit if taken after Spring 1994.<br />

Provides an introduction to computer hardware, physical design of computers,<br />

dataflow, coding systems, input/output devices, and data storage techniques.<br />

Discusses machine-program interaction, operating systems, and interfacing.<br />

The laboratory presents low level systems communication and<br />

operation.<br />

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY 4<br />

Introduction to Computer Networks<br />

4 UNITS - (A)<br />

Advisory: Computer Technology 1 or equivalent.<br />

Introduces the concepts of networking, the OSI Model; methods of signaling<br />

and encoding; interfaces, modems, and transmission media; and examines<br />

the most important protocols involved in moving data over a communication<br />

network.<br />

Introduction to Computer Hardware<br />

One of two courses on the computer hardware and operation to prepare<br />

students for CompTIA A+ certification exam. Includes technology of hardware<br />

components: microprocessors, RAM, BIOS/CMOS, expansion bus,<br />

motherboard, power supply, HDD, FDD, CD, DVD, video, and sound, and<br />

how these form a working system, maintenance and simple troubleshooting<br />

One of two courses on the computer hardware and operation to prepare<br />

students for CompTIA A+ certification exam. Includes technology of portable<br />

computers, printers, understanding, installing and upgrading Microsoft<br />

Windows operating systems, working with the Windows Command Line<br />

Interface, troubleshooting and maintenance of Windows, essentials of computer<br />

security, networking, and internet<br />

Prerequisite: Computer Technology 4 with a satisfactory grade.<br />

Advisory: Computer Technology 1 and 12.<br />

Provides an in-depth examination of the technology and skills necessary to<br />

install, configure, and operate local and wide-area computer networks. Prepare<br />

the student for the CompTIA Network+ Certification examination.<br />

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY 20<br />

Computer Logic and Arithmetic<br />

Prerequisite: Electronics 4 and 8 with a satisfactory grade.<br />

A study of the principles and applications of the logic devices used in digital<br />

systems, including the number systems, Boolean algebra, logic and truth<br />

tables, logic gates and bistable devices.<br />
