English Speech as a Second Language IV<br />

Pre-requisite: Speech 73 Speech 60C or appropriate placement score.<br />

Co-requisite: Speech 99/60D.<br />

A level seven intensive speech course for persons who use English as a<br />

second language who may have adequate reading, grammatical and writing<br />

skills but need more help in specific areas of articulation, pronunciation and<br />

oral composition.<br />

The Process of Interpersonal Communication<br />

3 UNITS - (CSU)<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent. ESL students should have taken<br />

Speech Communication 113 with a satisfactory grade.<br />

Provides practice in informal speaking situations which take place when two<br />

to five people talk. Covers self concept, feedback, perception, verbal and<br />

non-verbal communication, and listening. Communication barriers and breakdowns<br />

studied. Classroom experimentation and exercises provide<br />

understanding and awareness of the skills necessary for successful<br />

interpersonal communication.<br />

Communication Across Cultures (Pending)<br />

Prerequisite: Speech 121 and English 101<br />

Analysis of cultural influence on human communication acts. This class<br />

focuses on the processes and problems of intercultural communication in<br />

multi-cultural, multiethnic urban environments. Emphasis on gender,<br />

political, economic, and both nonverbal and verbal interpersonal forces<br />

Introduction to Oral Interpretation of Literature<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Advisory: English 101 or equivalent and Speech Communication 101 with a<br />

satisfactory grade.<br />

Oral interpretation of the printed word. Stresses techniques of discovering a<br />

published author’s meanings and expressing those meanings to an audience<br />

through reading aloud. Of special value to those whose occupation will involve<br />

reading aloud to others: Broadcasting, Child Development, Education,<br />

Recreation and Speech Communication majors.<br />

UC accepts only one of Speech Communication 130 or Theatre 210.<br />

Meets both AA Degree and CSU Transfer requirements in Humanities.<br />

Prerequisites: Speech 111 and Speech 121<br />

SPEECH 185 Directed Study- 1 UNIT (CSU)<br />

SPEECH 285 Directed Study - 2 UNITS (CSU)<br />

SPEECH 385 Directed Study - 3 UNITS (CSU)<br />

Allows students to pursue Directed Study on a contract basis under the<br />

direction of a supervising instructor.<br />

Prerequisite: 2.5 grade point average and at least 6 units of transferable<br />

Speech Communication courses and approval of the project.<br />

Refer to the “Directed Study” section of this catalog for additional<br />

information.<br />

Credit Limit: A maximum of 3 units in Directed Study may be taken for<br />

credit
