Advisory: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

May be offered in alternate semesters. Principles of inclusive, respectful<br />

care-giving for infants and toddlers within a variety of program designs. Topics<br />

cover typical and atypical development; age-appropriate environments ;<br />

health, safety and licensing issues, as well as observation assessments,<br />

family communications, home visiting, resources, and current research.<br />

Observing and Recording Children’s Behavior<br />

3 UNITS - (CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Child Development 1 or equivalent and English 28/31 or higher.<br />

Verification of annual Mantoux test (or chest x-ray) is required.<br />

Students observe, record and interpret children’s behavior in a variety of<br />

settings. Students will apply this information to adapt the environment and<br />

curriculum to meet the individual needs of children within an early Childhood<br />

Program.<br />

Fostering Literacy Development in Young Children<br />

Advisory: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

May be offered in alternate semesters. Students interested or currently working<br />

in the field of early childhood education will build skills in promoting<br />

literacy in children birth through age five. Students will develop a strong<br />

foundation in early reading and writing within a developmentally appropriate<br />

approach.<br />

Prerequisite: Child Development 3 or 4 and 11 or equivalent.<br />

May be offered in alternate semesters. Prepares the student to establish<br />

and administer an early childhood program. Financial aspects of administration<br />

and legal rules and regulations pertaining to administration are emphasized.<br />

The course partially fulfills the State licensing requirements for<br />

the director.<br />

Prerequisite: Child Development 3 or 4 and 11 or equivalent.<br />

study of administration in early childhood programs. It includes proposal<br />

writing, discussion of licensing requirements, budget analysis, small business<br />

management, staff development, advocacy issues and development<br />

of a comprehensive parent education program.<br />

The Child in a Diverse Society<br />

3 UNITS - (CSU)<br />

Advisory: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

May be offered in alternate semesters. This course presents the philosophy<br />

and methods related to working with/young children and their families within<br />

a diverse society including ethnicity, language, culture, gender age, social<br />

class and exceptionality. Curriculum development, problem solving techniques<br />

and environmental designs will be studied from an inclusive perspective.<br />

May be offered in alternate semesters. This course is designed for students<br />

interested in specializing in or working with children with special needs.<br />

Instruction focuses on accommodating and adapting the physical environment,<br />

instructional strategies and curriculum to meet the needs of differently<br />

abled children and their families.<br />

settings as close to their typically developing peers as possible. A<br />

survey of disabilities from a child development perspective includes definition,<br />

May be offered in alternate semesters. The student will be introduced to the<br />

care of school age children. This course is designed for those currently<br />

working, or planning to work in before and after school child care. Students<br />

will develop age-appropriate curriculum, learn how to support the family<br />

and make use of community resources.<br />

School Age Programs II<br />

Co-requisite: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

May be offered in alternate semesters. Students will be introduced to school<br />

age childcare programs. It is designed for those planning to work or are<br />

working before and after school child care programs. Topics to be covered<br />

will be guidance of children’s behavior, the child in context of family and<br />

community, and administration of programs.<br />

Positive Guidance in Early Childhood Settings<br />

3 UNITS - (CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Child Development 2 or equivalent.<br />

Explorations of developmentally appropriate management techniques for<br />

children in earl childhood settings. Emphasis is on developing culturally<br />

sensitive individualized plans for behavior management of traditional and<br />

special needs children.<br />

Parenting<br />

3 UNITS - (CSU)<br />

Advisory: Child Development 1, Child Development 2, and English 21.<br />

May be offered in alternate semesters. Designed to assist parents and others<br />

interested in parent training, in developing a philosophy & guidelines<br />

for effective parenting. Parent-child relationships, alternatives in parenting<br />

style, and the impact of family dynamics is explored.
