LOS ANGELES CITY COLLEGE 80TH ANNIVERSARY CATALOG 2008-2009<br />

(Chemistry 60 or 68)<br />

• Overall college grade point average of 2.5<br />

• Satisfactory score on the admission assessment test (contact Nursing<br />

Department for details)<br />

• Satisfactory “cut score” of 80 or higher based on the Chancellor’s<br />

validation study<br />

• Completion of all of the admission requirements of <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City<br />

College<br />

• Graduation from an accredited U.S. High School or equivalent or<br />

graduation from an accredited U.S. College or university or equivalent.<br />

If students received their high school diploma from a foreign country<br />

and/or are requested equivalency of foreign college credits to fulfill<br />

prerequisites, the transcripts must be evaluated for equivalency by an<br />

<strong>LACC</strong> approved agency.<br />

• Students must also meet health and other requirements mandated by<br />

the program and affiliating hospitals and/or clinical prior to entry. For<br />

additional requirements, please attend one of the Informtion Sessions<br />

where details are discussed.<br />

It is highly recommended that the following co-requisites/graduation<br />

requirements be completed prior to entry into the Registered Nursing Program.<br />

Those courses that have not been satisfactorily completed will need to be<br />

completed during the 4 semesters of the Registered Nursing program. It is<br />

the student’s responsibility that the following courses be completed prior to<br />

graduation and taking the NCLEX-RN examination.<br />

1. Sociology 1 or Anthropology 101<br />

- Must be completed prior to 4 th semester.<br />

2. Speech 101 - Must be completed prior to 3 rd semester<br />

3. 3 units of American Institutions<br />

- Must be completed prior to 4 th semester<br />

4. 3 units of Humanities - Must be completed prior to 4 th semester<br />

5. 1 unit of P.E. - Must be completed prior to 4 th semester<br />

Also note: The information presented may be updated or modified subject<br />

to district, state and/or BRN requests. The <strong>LACC</strong> Registered Nursing<br />

Curriculum is in the process of being modified to align with the other <strong>LACC</strong>D<br />

nursing programs in the district. These modifications may be in place by Fall<br />

Note to Current LVN’s:<br />

Current practicing LVN’s are invited to complete the <strong>As</strong>sociate Degree<br />

Registered Nursing Program by applying and being accepted into the second<br />

year of the program based on space availability. LVNs must have taken a 2<br />

unit Transition/Bridge course. LVN candidates must complete the above<br />

prerequisites. This will enable licensed vocational nurses with 6 months<br />

clinical experience to complete requirements for the Registered Nursing<br />

<strong>As</strong>sociate Degree in 1 year.<br />

<strong>LACC</strong> also offers a 30-unit option for LVN’s. Candidates who choose this<br />

option will not be graduates of the <strong>LACC</strong> Nursing Program. Also several<br />

states in the USA will not recognize nurses who take this option. Additional<br />

information is available about this option in the Nursing Department.<br />

To complete general education requirements in this area of study, Plan B for the AA/AS<br />

Degree is required.<br />

NOTE: The Plan B requirements for this program include 16 units in Natural Sciences<br />

NOT 12 units as listed in Plan B under other programs in this catalog.<br />

PLAN B: Please consult with a counselor about specific courses needed or see the college catalog<br />

"Graduation Requirements" section. Plan B is not designed for transfer to a four-year college.<br />

RN RESIDENCY IN PEDIATRICS PROGRAM<br />

<strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City College’s Nursing Program in partnership with Children’s<br />

Hospital <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> is offers a Registered Nurse Residency in Pediatrics<br />

Program. For information contact the Registered Nursing Department located<br />

in the Cub Center or contact Children’s Hospital directly at (323) 660-2450<br />

extension 5871.<br />

A clinical placement is required for this course. Students will be responsible<br />

for securing and maintaining their clinical placement within the Children’s<br />

Hospital <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> (“CHLA”) system.<br />

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT PROGRAM<br />

<strong>LACC</strong> also offers a Certified Nursing Program, Nursing 100 every semester.<br />

This is an 6 unit course that prepares students for the certified nursing<br />

assistant ARCHIVED until Fall 2009/Spring 2010 examination given by the<br />

Red Cross. Upon completion of the certification exam, students may enroll<br />

in the Home Health Aid course.
