LOS ANGELES CITY COLLEGE 80TH ANNIVERSARY CATALOG 2008-2009<br />
Academic Probation - After attempting 12 units, a student whose<br />
cumulative grade point average (Effective Fall 1981) falls below 2.00 is<br />
placed on academic probation.<br />
Academic Renewal - A student may initiate a petition to have his/her<br />
record reviewed for the removal of grade(s) from permanent record for the<br />
purpose of computing the grade point average. A student must meet<br />
specific conditions and may only ha e a maximum of 18 units removed.<br />
Add Permit - A form issued by an instructor which permits the student to<br />
add the class if the instructor determines that there is room. Enrollment in<br />
the class is official only if the add permit is processed by the office of<br />
Admissions and Records.<br />
Advisory, Enrollment - An advisory is a condition of enrollment that a<br />
student is advised (but not required) to meet before, or in conjunction with,<br />
enrollment in a course.<br />
Appeal - A student request for reconsideration of a decision made<br />
affecting disciplinary action, grade change, prerequisite challenge, etc.<br />
Application for Admission - A form provided by the Office of Admissions<br />
and Records on which the student enters identifying data and requests<br />
admittance to a specific semester.<br />
Articulation Agreement - The community colleges work together with the<br />
University of California, the California State University and private<br />
postsecondary colleges/universities to establish a course agreement to<br />
enable transfer students to receive credit for their academic programs.<br />
<strong>As</strong>sessment - <strong>As</strong>sessment is the process the college uses to evaluate<br />
student skills in areas such as reading, writing and mathematics and<br />
English as a Second Language (ESL).<br />
A.S.O.- Organization which all enrolled students are eligible to join is<br />
called the <strong>As</strong>sociated Students Organization.<br />
<strong>As</strong>sociate Degree - A degree (<strong>As</strong>sociate in Arts, A.A., or <strong>As</strong>sociate in<br />
Science, A.S.) granted by a community college which recognizes a<br />
student’s satisfactory completion of an organized program of study<br />
consisting of a minimum of 60 degree applicable semester units.<br />
Audit - A student’s attendance in a class with permission of the instructor<br />
and payment of a fee. No college credit nor grade is given.<br />
CalWORKs Program – CalWORKs (California Work Opportunity and<br />
Responsibility to Kids), previously GAIN, is an <strong>LACC</strong> Program offering<br />
training and support services to students receiving TANF (Temporary<br />
<strong>As</strong>sistance to Needy Families), previously AFDC.<br />
CAN – The California Articulation Number System, known as CAN, is a<br />
means of identifying comparable courses offered at <strong>LACC</strong> and other<br />
colleges in California. CAN is a system that uses the same prefix and<br />
number to identify a course on every participating campus. Each campus<br />
has its own number; the CAN is added to denote courses that can be used<br />
in lieu of each other at participating colleges.<br />
Catalog Rights – Catalog rights refer to the right of every continuing<br />
student to choose one, and only one, catalog under whose course<br />
requirements the student is to be evaluated for the purpose of determining<br />
whether the student meets the requirements for <strong>LACC</strong> graduation or for<br />
certification to transfer to UC or CSU. The continuing student may select<br />
the catalog which was in effect when the student initially enrolled at <strong>LACC</strong><br />
or any catalog in effect thereafter through and including the semester<br />
when the student petitions for graduation or transfer certification.<br />

Certificate Programs – Program designated for students who are looking<br />
for instruction with a high degree of specialization. Certificate programs<br />
vary in length and may require less than two years of full-time study, and<br />
may be pursued on a part-time basis. At the point of completion students<br />
may request the issuance of a certificate of completion.<br />
Certification of CSU General Education Requirements – Completion of<br />
a body of transfer courses which meet the general education requirements<br />
of the California State University system (CSU).<br />
Concurrent Enrollment – A student may enroll in two mutually dependent<br />
courses within the same semester and/or may be simultaneously enrolled<br />
at both <strong>LACC</strong> and a high school or another college.<br />
Cooperative Education – An instructional program that is designed to<br />
complement the student’s academic training with realistic on-the-job<br />
experiences.<br />
Co-requisites – A condition of enrollment consisting of what course is<br />
required to be taken simultaneously in order to enroll in another course.<br />
Counseling – Guidance provided by professional counselors in academic,<br />
vocational, and personal matters.<br />
Course – A subject of study. Identified by Title and Number; for example:<br />
Accounting 1.<br />
Credit by Examination – Credit granted for proficiency previously<br />
accomplished through testing.<br />
Cross-Referenced – Course content is the same as another course, e.g.<br />
HIST 7 and PHIL 23.<br />
CSU – California State University.<br />
Dismissal – A student on academic or progress probation for three<br />
semesters may be dismissed from the College. Once dismissed the<br />
student may not attend any college within the <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> Community<br />
College District for a period of one year and must petition for readmittance<br />
at the end of that period of time.<br />
Drop – A student’s official withdrawal from a class.<br />
Elective – Courses which a student may choose without restriction of a<br />
particular major program-curriculum.<br />
Full-Time Student – A student enrolled and active in 12 or more units,<br />
during the Fall or Spring Semester.<br />
General Education Requirements – A group of courses from several<br />
subject areas which are required for graduation by state law.<br />
Grade Points – The numerical value of a college letter grade. A=4, B=3,<br />
C=2, D=1, F=0, times the number of units of the course: An A in a 5 unit<br />
course equals 20 points.<br />
Grade Point Average (GPA) – The GPA is determined by dividing the<br />
total grade points earned by the number of attempted units.<br />
Honors Program – The <strong>LACC</strong> Honors program is designed for students<br />
with a 3.0 GPA or higher who plan on transferring to a four-year college or<br />
university.<br />
IGETC – Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum.<br />
Completion of all the requirements in the Intersegmental General<br />
Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) will permit a student to transfer<br />
from a community college to a campus in either the California State<br />
University or the University of California.
