The Family & Consumer Studies Department offers two career paths for<br />

students interested in a career in institutional food service and nutritional<br />

care of clients. Students may obtain a Dietetic Technician <strong>As</strong>sociate of<br />

Science degree and/or a Dietetic Service Supervisor certificate.<br />

When you complete an accredited certificate program in dietetics at <strong>LACC</strong>,<br />

you will be skilled in food preparation, nutrition, food service management,<br />

food sanitation and food safety.<br />

The American Dietetic <strong>As</strong>sociation reports that demand continues to increase<br />

steadily for dietetic professionals as our population ages and society<br />

places more emphasis on nutrition. Full-time dietetic technicians<br />

earn between $26,000 - $37,000 per year on average and are employed<br />

by hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, schools, public health programs,<br />

health clubs and food companies – any place where the nutritional and<br />

safe preparation of large volumes of food is required.<br />

Career opportunities include: Food preparation, management of food<br />

production and/or nutritional counseling for: Hospitals, HMOs, Clinics,<br />

Nursing Homes and Research Facilities; WIC, Meals on Wheels and other<br />

Public Programs; Schools & Day-Care Centers; Correctional Facilities;<br />

Restaurants; Food Companies & Distribution Operations; and Health<br />

Clubs & Weight Management Centers.<br />

SPECIAL NOTE:<br />

During the July 23-24, 2001 meeting, the Dietetic Technician Program at <strong>Los</strong><br />

<strong>Angeles</strong> City College was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation<br />

for Dietetics Education (CADE) of The American Dietetic <strong>As</strong>sociation. The<br />

Dietetic Technicians, Registered (DTRs) are trained in food and nutrition<br />

and are an integral part of health care and food service management teams.<br />

Dietetic Technicians, Registered work independently or in teams with Registered<br />

Dietitians in a variety of employment settings including health care,<br />

business and industry, community/public health, public health, food service,<br />

and research.<br />

DTRs work in:<br />

• Hospitals, HMOs, clinics, nursing homes, retirement centers, hospices,<br />

home health care programs, and research facilities, helping to treat<br />

and prevent disease and administering medical nutrition therapy as an<br />

important part of health care teams.<br />

• Schools, day care centers, correctional facilities, restaurants, health<br />

care facilities, corporations, and hospitals, managing employees, purchasing,<br />

and food preparation and preparing budgets within food service<br />

operations.<br />

• WIC programs, community/public health agencies, Meals on Wheels,<br />

and community health programs, developing and teaching nutrition<br />

classes for the public.<br />

• Health clubs, weight management clinics, and community wellness centers,<br />

helping to educate clients about the connection between food,<br />

fitness, and health.<br />

• Food companies, contract food management companies, or food vending<br />

and distributing operations, developing menus, overseeing food<br />

service sanitation and food safety, and preparing food labeling information<br />

and nutrient analysis.<br />

Educational & Professional Requirements<br />

• Courses are planned in sequence. Completion of all courses with at<br />

least a "C" grade is required for progress in the program.<br />

• The <strong>As</strong>sociate of Science degree curriculum meets the requirements<br />

of CADE of the American Dietetic <strong>As</strong>sociation.<br />

• Refer to Graduation Requirements "Plan B" for additional information.<br />

Students wanting to transfer to a four-year college or university with a<br />

major in Dietetics or Nutrition should complete eighteen units in preparation<br />

for the major along with the General Education courses needed<br />

for transfer to the institution of their choice. The <strong>As</strong>sociate of Arts degree<br />

should be in Liberal Studies.
