History and Appreciation of Dance<br />

This course provides a historical perspective of dance from ritual to<br />

contemporary theatrical dance forms. It focuses on the ethnic, cultural and<br />

ritual forms of dance as it affected and reflected the world in which people<br />

lived. Primarily, this course will focus on how Dance reflects the times,<br />

historical, social and political climate of the day. The class will consider the<br />

impact of dance on the western world and how it has been affected by the<br />

different dance traditions world-wide<br />

DANCE SPECIALTIES 459<br />

Flamenco and Spanish Dancing<br />

1 UNIT - (RPT 3) (UC:CSU)<br />

This course introduces the student to flamenco and Spanish dance with an<br />

emphasis on correct posture, individual steps, and arm movements.<br />

Terminology, various rhythms, basic step combinations and castanet<br />

technique will also be covered<br />

Stress Management Techniques<br />

Through Dance and Movement<br />

This course helps identify stressors and introduce techniques of dance and<br />

dance therapy. Movement mediations, authentic movement studies, breathing<br />

exercises, yoga, physical therapy and relaxation exercises are introduced.<br />

Multicultural rhythms and dance forms are used to enhance group<br />

experiences. May be taken 4 times.<br />

Hatha Yoga Conditioning for Dancers<br />

This course provides dance students who have attained a basic level of<br />

yoga proficiency from Dance 405 (Yoga Conditioning for Dance) access to a<br />

more in-depth Hatha yoga practice that offer physical challenges beyond a<br />

beginning level and provides more advanced experiences in conditioning,<br />

flexibility and endurance to supplement dance technique. Course may be<br />

taken four times.<br />

Dance Movement for Instrumentalists and Vocalists<br />
