Intensive study of the basic elements of music notation, music reading,<br />

sight singing, and ear training. May also be used as the introductory course<br />

in the Music Major Core Program.<br />

MUSIC 201<br />

Harmony I<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 200 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Study of diatonic harmony including primary and secondary triads, the dominant<br />

seventh chord and their inversions. Also includes harmonizing figured<br />

and unfigured bass, simple melodies, and the writing of original<br />

phrases.<br />

Harmony II<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 201 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Study of Chromatic harmony including secondary dominants and secondary<br />

diminished sevenths, secondary seventh chords, sequences, simple modulations,<br />

and the writing of short original compositions.<br />

MUSIC 203<br />

Harmony III<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 202 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Study of advanced Chromatic harmony and analysis. Students demonstrate<br />

skill required by harmonizing figured and unfigured bass melodies and writing<br />

short original compositions.<br />

MUSIC 211<br />

Musicianship I<br />

2 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 200 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Co-requisite: Music 201.<br />

This course is correlated with Music 201: Harmony I and includes simple diatonic<br />

melodies, two-part play-and-sing drills, and simple melodic, harmonic,<br />

and rhythmic dictation.<br />

MUSIC 212<br />

Musicianship II<br />

2 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 211 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Co-requisite: Music 202.<br />

This course is correlated with Music 202: Harmony II, consisting of reading<br />

intermediate level tonal and modal melodies, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic<br />

dictation. Sight singing and ear training are stressed.<br />

Musicianship III<br />

2 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 212 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Co-requisite: Music 203.<br />

This course, correlated with Music 203: Harmony III, includes advanced<br />

chromatic melody, harmony, and rhythm, using sight singing, ear training, and<br />

dictation.<br />

MUSIC 220<br />

Music Theory and Listening Lab<br />

0.5 UNITS - (RPT 3)<br />

Co-requisite: Music 200, 201, 202, 203, 211, 212, 213, 231, 252, 300, 301,<br />

302 or 303.<br />

This course allows students currently enrolled in any of the co-requisite music<br />

theory classes to use the lab equipment and materials to enhance applicable<br />

skills necessary for success.<br />

MUSIC 221<br />

Counterpoint I<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 202 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

This course provides training in the writing of two- and three-voice contrapuntal<br />

compositions in the Baroque style. The Two- and Three-part Inventions,<br />

keyboard suites and fugues of J.S. Bach, in addition to works of some of his<br />

contemporaries, are analyzed.
