College Newspaper<br />

The “Collegian” is the official student newspaper for <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City<br />

College. It is published twice a month during the academic year. Its<br />

purposes are to disseminate information of interest to the college<br />

students, faculty, staff and administrators and to offer a means for<br />

practical application of the journalistic principles and techniques taught<br />

through the Media Arts department.<br />

The “Collegian” is published as a learning experience, offered under the<br />

College’s journalism instructional program of the Media Arts department.<br />

The editorial and advertising materials published, including any opinions<br />

expressed, are the responsibility of the student newspaper staff, free from<br />

prior restraint under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.<br />

Accordingly, material published, including any opinions expressed,<br />

should not be interpreted as the position of the <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> Community<br />

College District, <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City College, or any <strong>LACC</strong>D or <strong>LACC</strong> officer<br />

or employee.<br />

Forensics<br />

The Department of Speech Communication provides opportunities for<br />

students to compete in intercollegiate debate tournaments as well as<br />

individual Forensics events. Having existed at <strong>LACC</strong> since the 1930’s, the<br />

Forensics squad participates in local state, and national competitions<br />

throughout the academic year. Established on a strong winning<br />

foundation, the current student competitors continue the tradition in<br />

speaking events ranging from debate to oral interpretation of literature.<br />

The First Year Experience Learning Community is a program that allows<br />

freshmen students an alternate approach to learning that encourages<br />

relationships with peers and their instructors. Participants will enroll in<br />

selected classes as a group. Peer mentors will be assigned to assist in<br />

the classroom. Academic counseling will be provided for all participants,<br />

helping to ensure the students’ academic needs are met. Such reinforcement<br />

helps student retention, encourages student partnerships, and<br />

creates an encouraging learning environment. Interested students should<br />

apply as soon as possible because space is limited.<br />

LOS ANGELES CITY COLLEGE 80TH ANNIVERSARY CATALOG 2008-2009<br />

The Foundation provides deserving students with the opportunity to achieve<br />

their academic goals by providing a full range of scholarships and awards. All<br />

awards and scholarships are given on an annual basis normally during the<br />

Spring semester. For application, criteria and requirements visit the foundation<br />

website: www.laccfoundation.org. The specific and primary purposes for<br />

which the Foundation is formed are: (1) To promote, foster, encourage and<br />

provide scientific, literary, educational and recreational facilities at <strong>LACC</strong>; (2)<br />

To provide for scholarships, fellowships, grants in aid, loans and other financial<br />

assistance to worthy students and members of the faculty; (3) To further<br />

research and provide for associated facilities; (4) To receive gifts, bequests or<br />

devises either outright or as a trustee or beneficiary of a trust, to hold, transfer,<br />

buy, sell, invest, or reinvest real property, cash, stocks and bonds, and all<br />

other evidences of value; (5) To expend moneys for the general welfare of the<br />

students and faculty of <strong>LACC</strong>; and (6) To otherwise provide aids to education<br />

supplementary to state and local tax means for the support and benefit of<br />

<strong>LACC</strong>.<br />

The Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation, designed to<br />

receive gifts for the college from individuals, corporations, and foundations.<br />

<strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> City College offers various educational programs, ranging<br />

from basic to advanced levels, to help Foster Care providers meet the<br />

complex and unique needs of the children placed in their homes. The<br />

Foster Care Education program trains Foster Parents and Foster Care<br />

providers to improve the lives of families in crisis by promoting teamwork<br />

and sensitivity.<br />

All classes are open to various types of Foster Care providers although<br />

some classes do have enrollment limits to Foster Family Agencies, Social<br />

Workers, and Group Home Staff, among others.<br />

Available workshops include: Foster & Kinship Care Education (FKCE);<br />

Independent Living A or B (Adults or Teens); Medical or Specialized FKCE<br />

Pre-Service (F- Rate or D- Rate); State Mandate Training (B – Rate);<br />

Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (MAPP); Kinship Education<br />

Preparation Support (KEPS); Enhanced KEPS Orientations; Kin-Gap<br />

Orientations. Certificate provided upon completion of the requirements.<br />

HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTER<br />

The Health Center services all currently enrolled students. It offers basic<br />

primary and non-emergency care, health care counseling, emotional and<br />

behavioral counseling, family planning, referrals, TB skin test, and other<br />

laboratory tests and immunizations (TD, Hep B, MMR), some which carry<br />

additional fees. Appointments can be made to see a medical provider or<br />

mental health professional.<br />

A mandatory Student Health Fee of $11.00 per semester is payable at the<br />

time of registration. (For information on Health Fee Waivers, see “Policies:<br />
