JOURNALISM 101<br />

Collecting and Writing News<br />

3 UNITS - (CSU)<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Lecture 3 hours<br />

This introductory course stresses instruction and practice in news gathering<br />

and news writing. Extensive practical writing experience is geared to news<br />

publications and the news media. It also includes a study of newspaper,<br />

radio and television news. Adherence to professional writing style, and legal<br />

and ethical aspects of the profession are included.<br />

JOURNALISM 105<br />

Mass Communications<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Lecture 3 hours<br />

A survey of America’s mass communications systems and how they affect<br />

human behavior in relation to social, political and economic institutions. Newspapers,<br />

magazines, television, advertising, public relations, books, records<br />

and films will be included. Students will gain an understanding of the ways<br />

media have been used and are used to influence, manipulate and reflect<br />

society and special interest groups within the society and thus will become<br />

more critical media observers.<br />

JOURNALISM 217<br />

Publication Laboratory<br />

2 UNITS - (RPT 3) (CSU)<br />

Co-requisite: Concurrent enrollment in Journalism 218.<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Laboratory: 6 hours to be arranged.<br />

Laboratory experience for writers, editors and photographers. Stresses hands<br />

on application of writing and photographic skills through production of the<br />

college newspaper, the <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> Collegian. Desktop editing and publishing<br />

techniques (on Apple computers) will be covered.
