LOS ANGELES CITY COLLEGE 80TH ANNIVERSARY CATALOG 2008-2009<br />

expertise and skills needed to obtain a job in the music industry; and the<br />

<strong>As</strong>sociate of Arts (AA) Degree program, designed for students planning to<br />

transfer to four-year universities.<br />

Our faculty members are dedicated teachers who are active in the music<br />

industry as arrangers, copyists, composers, theorists, sound engineers and<br />

performers who play and sing regularly as soloists and with professional<br />

ensembles.<br />

Students have a variety of performance opportunities, giving public concerts<br />

in Commercial and Classical Voice, Piano and Chamber Ensemble,<br />

Choir, Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble and our famous<br />

Studio Jazz Band. In addition to being performers, music majors enter<br />

such fields as Recording Industry (Producing, Engineering, Arranging);<br />

Television and Radio (Program Director, Music Licensing); Music Technology<br />

(Sound Editor); Composing (Commercial Jingles, TV/Film); Conducting;<br />

Music Business (Music Distributor, Marketing); Music Education; Music<br />

Librarian; Music Publishing (Music Editor, Copyrights); Music Therapy;<br />

Music Communications (Publisher, Reporter); Instrument Making and Repair<br />

and more.<br />

Transfer/Career Program<br />

The Music Major Core Curriculum is outlined below. Although the order and<br />

semester in which courses are taken may have to be modified to meet individual<br />

needs, all courses listed as requirements are needed for the <strong>As</strong>sociate<br />

of Arts degree with a Major in Music. Students will select additional courses<br />

in Music needed for proficiency in particular performance areas, composition,<br />

and orchestration and arranging.<br />

All students should see a music counselor in the Music Department for assistance<br />

in arranging their academic programs.<br />

Please Note: 0.5 unit labs do not count towards the AA Degree.<br />

The Performance Ensemble requirement may be satisfied by enrollment in<br />

and satisfactory completion of any of the following courses: Music 251,<br />

351, 501, 511, 521, 531, 561, 705, 711, 725, 731, 751, 765, 771, 775, 781.<br />

*These starred (*) courses must be included in the minimum requirements<br />

under Graduation Requirements “Plan A.” All courses in the core<br />

curriculum must be completed under Graduation Requirements “Plan B.”<br />

It is also strongly recommended that students consider auditioning for<br />

Applied Music in their primary performance area while at <strong>LACC</strong>.<br />

Students may select "PLAN A" or “Plan B” general education requirements to graduate.<br />

PLAN A: Please consult with a counselor about specific courses needed or see the college catalog<br />

"Graduation Requirements" section. Plan A is designed for transfer to a four-year college or university.<br />

However, requirements vary depending upon the individual institution. Please consult with a<br />

counselor for the specific requirements of the university you plan to attend.<br />

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS<br />

The Commercial Music Certificate curriculum has been designed to provide<br />

the student with means to acquire valuable knowledge, expertise, and marketable<br />

skills with which to obtain employment in the following areas:<br />

Instrumental Performer: Brass, Guitar, Organ, Percussion,<br />

Piano, Strings, Woodwinds<br />

Music Copyist<br />

Music Technology<br />

Orchestrator/Arranger<br />

Vocal Performer<br />

Each Certificate is made up of four skill levels. A Skill Certificate will be<br />

awarded by the Music Department upon application by the student to the<br />

Department showing satisfactory completion of the requirements for each<br />

level. A Commercial Music Certificate will be awarded by the Music Department<br />

to a student who has successfully completed the four levels required<br />

for a given specialty.
