Twentieth Century Compositional Techniques<br />

Prerequisite: Music 202 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

This course provides training in the study of the melodic, harmonic, and<br />

rhythmic techniques of the Twentieth Century. The students will compose<br />

short pieces using the covered techniques.<br />

Jazz and Commercial Harmony<br />

3 UNITS – (CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 202 and 212 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

The subject matter of this course includes the study of the chords and chord<br />

progressions used in jazz and popular music styles.<br />

MUSIC 231<br />

Orchestration and Arranging I<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 202 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Advisory: Music 241.<br />

This course offers training in beginning orchestration and arranging. Writing<br />

for the various instrumental groups of the symphony orchestra and the jazz<br />

band is covered. One classical and one jazz band arrangement will be<br />

completed.<br />

Orchestration and Arranging II<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 231 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

This course offers training in advanced orchestration and arranging. Covers<br />

advanced writing for various instrumental groups of the symphony orchestra<br />

and jazz band. One Romantic era or 20th Century orchestration and one<br />

advanced jazz band arrangement will be completed.<br />

MUSIC 240<br />

Advanced Practice Lab-Music Theory and Listening<br />

0.5 UNITS- (RPT 3)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 220 or equivalent.<br />

This course allows more advanced students, who are enrolled in any of the<br />

co-requisite Music 220: Music Theory and Listening courses, to continue to<br />

use the lab equipment and materials to further enhance applicable skills<br />

necessary for success.<br />

Music Notation and Copying I<br />

1 UNIT – (CSU)<br />

This course provides instruction and practical experience in the techniques<br />

and materials required for music preparation. This course does not deal<br />

with music composition, but only with how to copy existing music in a professional<br />

manner.<br />

Music Notation and Copying II<br />

1 UNIT – (CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 241 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Continued instruction and practical experience in the techniques and materials<br />

required for music preparation to create both handwritten and computer<br />

generated scores.<br />

repertoire in combo setting. For intermediate and advanced players.<br />

Jazz Structure<br />

Prerequisite: Music 202 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

The subject matter of this course includes the study of chords and chord<br />

progressions as they relate to musical forms and structures employed in<br />

jazz performance. Improvisation, arranging for jazz combo, analysis, aural<br />

recognition and composition are included.<br />

MUSIC 261<br />

Electronic Music Workshop<br />

3 UNITS - (RPT 2) (CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 161 and Music 101 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

This course is a workshop in advanced electro-acoustic, MIDI event and<br />

audio editing, as well as digital audio data management and synchronization.<br />

Commercial Music Techniques I<br />

3 UNITS - (CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Music 161 and Music 201 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

This is the first in a sequence of courses offering opportunity to develop the<br />

techniques of music for commercial applications. Skills in the preparation of<br />

music for compact disc production, multimedia applications, audio production<br />

techniques, songwriting and stage performance will be emphasized.<br />

Prerequisite: Music 281 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

This is the second in a sequence of courses offering opportunity to develop<br />
