College Reading Skills<br />

6 UNITS - NDC<br />

Advisory: English 67 and English 68.<br />

English 20 provides instruction in techniques of writing of clear, coherent<br />

compositions and improvement in reading skills which reinforce writing skills<br />

necessary for academic success.<br />

ENGLISH 21<br />

English Fundamentals<br />

3 UNITS - NDC<br />

Prerequisite: English 20, ESL 6A, or appropriate placement score.<br />

Co-requisite: English 67.<br />

Advisory: English 68.<br />

Introduction to English fundamentals, focusing on basic grammar, reading,<br />

and writing skills with additional individual tutoring and writing practice in the<br />

Writing Center of the English/ESL Department.<br />

ENGLISH 28<br />

Intermediate Reading and Composition<br />

3 UNITS – (A)<br />

Prerequisite: ESL 6A or English 21 or equivalent or appropriate placement<br />

score.<br />

Advisory: English 67 and English 68.<br />

English 28 provides instruction in techniques of writing at the college level.<br />

It emphasizes grammar, essay writing, and reading assignments which reinforce<br />

writing skills.<br />

ENGLISH 31<br />

Composition and Critical Reading<br />

5 UNITS – (A)<br />

Prerequisite: ESL 6A or English 21 or appropriate placement score.<br />

Advisory: English 68.<br />

Intensive practice in reading, critical thinking, and writing skills needed in<br />

college transfer courses and on the job.<br />

ENGLISH 33<br />

Basic Vocabulary<br />

3 UNITS – NDC<br />

Prerequisite: English 20, or ESL 5A.<br />

English 33 is an intensive course to develop students’ vocabulary. Emphasis<br />

is on reading texts so that students learn word concepts, not just definitions;<br />

emphasis also on writing to expand students’ ability to express themselves<br />

with accuracy and fluency. Students will study word structures, forms,<br />

and origins to improve their reading and writing skills.<br />

ENGLISH 46<br />

Reading and Study Improvement<br />

3 UNITS – NDC<br />

Develops reading versatility and efficiency: rapid reading skills, skimming<br />

skills, critical reading skills and study skills. Prepares students to read materials<br />

used in college level courses.<br />

ENGLISH 47<br />

Reading Clinic<br />

3 UNITS – (RPT 1) NDC<br />

Develops the skills necessary to comprehend college level reading material:<br />

analysis of sentences, paragraphs, articles, and textbook format; techniques<br />

of outlining, underlining and critical reading; college level vocabularies.<br />

ENGLISH 67<br />

Writing Laboratory<br />

0.5 UNITS – (RPT 3) NDC<br />

Individual help in improving college writing; organization, clarity, and mechanics.<br />

Note: English 21 students are required to take English 67.<br />

ENGLISH 68<br />

Reading Laboratory<br />

0.5 UNITS – (RPT 3) NDC<br />

Individual help in improving college reading. Emphasis on vocabulary, sentence<br />

and paragraph meaning, and finding main ideas.
