Certificate<br />

The Advanced Prosthodontic, Implant and Maxillofacial Program is a unique<br />

program that trains dental technicians in the art and science of Advanced<br />

Prosthodontic Devices, Dental Implant Technology and the delicate art of<br />

making prosthetic replacements for the human face and head. Successful<br />

completion of the Dental Technology <strong>As</strong>sociate or Certificate Program is<br />

the prerequisite for selection into the Advanced Prosthodontic, Implant and<br />

Maxillofacial Program. The Advanced Prosthodontic, Implant and<br />

Maxillofacial Program, requires that the candidate spend a week shadowing<br />

a current student followed by an oral interview conducted by the UCLA<br />

program director and faculty. The program consists of the art science and<br />

technology of implant restorations, full mouth reconstructions and<br />

replacement parts of the human face.<br />

A certificate will be issued by UCLA Advanced Prosthodontic Department<br />

upon completion of the following courses:<br />

The Advanced Prosthodontic Program may offer the student the<br />

opportunity to complete another year of training in even more<br />

advanced techniques. In this case the students repeats the above<br />

sequence a second time.<br />

NOTE: Not every class is offered each semester. Refer to the current class<br />

schedule for current class offerings.<br />

PREREQUISITES: Specified prerequisites must be completed with a satisfactory<br />

grade or equivalent.<br />

All courses are open enrollment for men and women.<br />

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 100<br />

Introduction to the Dental Laboratory<br />

2 UNITS - (A)<br />

Lecture 1 hour. Lab 2 hours.<br />

Open to all college students.<br />

An Introduction to the modern dental laboratory. Working with gypsum products<br />

as well as model and die production are stressed.<br />

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 101<br />

Elements of Dental Technology<br />

2 UNITS - (A)<br />

Open to all college students.<br />

Advisory: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

Lecture 2 hours.<br />

Orientation to the field of dental laboratory technology, including ethics, jurisprudence,<br />

history, and categories of training and employment.<br />

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 102<br />

Dental Anatomy and Terminology<br />

3 UNITS - (A)<br />

Open to all college students.<br />

Advisory: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

Lecture 3 hours.<br />

Study of the oral cavity, including anatomy, histology, osteology, myology,<br />

form and function.<br />

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 103<br />

Complete Denture Prosthetics I<br />

2 UNITS - (A)<br />

Prerequisite: Dental Technology 100 (formerly 99C) with a satisfactory grade.<br />

Advisory: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

Lecture 1 hour. Lab 3 hours.<br />

The art and science of creating natural looking complete dentures. this course<br />

will include: anatomy, concepts of natural smile, selecting teeth, setting denture<br />

teeth, waxing to duplicate natural tissue, processing, finishing, and polishing<br />

dentures.<br />

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 105<br />

Complete Denture Prosthetics III<br />

2 UNITS - (A)<br />

Prerequisite: Dental Technology 104 with a satisfactory grade.<br />

Lecture 1 hour. Lab 3 hours.<br />

Construction of maxillary and mandibular dentures in balanced occlusion.<br />

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 106<br />

Dental Materials<br />

3 UNITS - (A)<br />

Prerequisite: Dental Technology 100 (formerly 99C) with a satisfactory grade.<br />

Advisory: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

Lecture 2 hours. Lab 2 hours.<br />

Study of the physical properties, composition, and uses of dental materials<br />

by lecture and demonstration.<br />

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 108<br />

Gnathological Concepts<br />

3 UNITS - (A)<br />

Lecture 2 hours. Lab 2 hours.<br />

A study of advanced occlusion concepts. Organic waxing of occlusal surfaces<br />

will be accomplished on fully adjustable articulators; mandibular tooth<br />

carvings will also be completed.<br />

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY 109<br />

Fixed Prosthetics I<br />

4 UNITS - (A)<br />

Prerequisite: Dental Technology 100 (formerly 99C) with a satisfactory grade.<br />

Advisory: English 21 or equivalent.<br />

Lecture 2 hour. Lab 6 hours.<br />

Waxing anterior and posterior single units by using PTC techniques and<br />

methodology based on student learning outcomes. Learning and understading<br />

concepts such as: tooth contour alignment, functional and morphological<br />

occlusion. Applied techiques in spruing, investing and metal finish and polish<br />

are part of the course outline.
