An introductory course acquaints students with the major principles of<br />

sociology as they are applied to contemporary social problems.<br />

SOCIOLOGY 2<br />

American Social Problems<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

This course involves the identification and analysis of contemporary social<br />

problems. It is concerned with problems in human relationships and social<br />

institutions. Among the contemporary social problems studied in the course<br />

are racism, sexism, crime, poverty, and family disorganization.<br />

Ethnic and Racial Minorities in the United States<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

This course analyzes the nature, causes and consequences of prejudice<br />

and discrimination. Strategies for reducing prejudice and discrimination will<br />

also be examined.<br />

Marriage and Family Life<br />

Theory and Research dealing with the family as a social institution. Its<br />

structure and functions, including historical changes, emerging various<br />

patterns, and the influence of contemporary society on the family.<br />

Oral communication is basic to all human activity- - to individual<br />

development, to interpersonal activity and to the functioning of all political,<br />

business, economic , cultural and social institutions. Speech<br />

communication examines communication behavior with the goal of<br />

understanding the structure, patterns, and effects of human<br />

communication and of facilitating a higher quality of communication<br />

effectiveness both for individuals and for society. It seeks to improve<br />

individual abilities for public speaking, handling informal conversations,<br />

creating and maintaining healthy relationships, interacting with individuals<br />

from other cultures, solving problems in groups and reaching sound<br />

decisions, managing the communication dynamics of an organization<br />

and becoming effective producers and consumers of informative,<br />

persuasive and artistic messages. The mission of this department is to<br />

effectively teach these skills.<br />

PREREQUISITES: Specified prerequisites must be completed with a<br />

satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Speech Clinic<br />

1 UNIT - (RPT 3) NDC<br />

Advisory: Speech Communication 113 with a satisfactory grade and English<br />

28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Helps students with speech disabilities such as stuttering, misarticulation<br />

(including lisping), voice disorders, acquired brain injury, cleft palate, etc.<br />

Helps advanced ESL students with pronunciation problems and English<br />

speakers with regional dialects. Improvements made through group and<br />

individual training and practice.<br />

SPEECH 71<br />

Speaking English as a Second Language I<br />

3 UNITS – NDC<br />

Prerequisite: ESL3A/3B/ 3C with a satisfactory grade or appropriate<br />

placement score.<br />

Co-requisite: Speech 60A.<br />

A level four course for persons who use English as a second language.<br />

Stresses the most common words in English, their pronunciation and usage.<br />

Develops skill in basic spoken English communication. May not be taken<br />

concurrently with any speech class other than Speech 60.
