Italian Civilization<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Study of Civilization of Italy from the origins to the present times. Conducted<br />

in English.<br />

ITALIAN 21<br />

Fundamentals of Italian I<br />

3 UNITS - (UC:CSU)<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Introduces the fundaments of Italian pronunciation and grammar structure.<br />

Offers practical material for simple conversation based on everyday<br />

experiences. Italian 21 and 22 are together equivalent to Italian 1.<br />

ITALIAN 22<br />

Fundamental of Italian II<br />

3 UNITS – (UC:CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Italian 21 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

This course continues to provide students with the basic knowledge of<br />

grammar and vocabulary at the second level of fundamentals of Italian.<br />

UC Limit: Italian 21 and 22 combined equals Italian 1; maximum credit, 5<br />

units; both courses must be taken for credit to be granted.<br />

JAPANESE<br />

One year of high school study in Japanese corresponds to one college<br />

semester or one semester of college Japanese equals one full year of high<br />

school study.<br />

Required courses: Japanese 1, 2, 34; Humanities 20.<br />

JAPANESE 1<br />

Elementary Japanese I<br />

5 UNITS - (UC: CSU)<br />

Corresponds to the first year of high school Japanese.<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Fundamentals of pronunciation and grammar, basic vocabulary, useful<br />

phrases; reading and writing with Romanized alphabet and Japanese scripts,<br />

basic facts on the geography, customs and culture of Japan.<br />

JAPANESE 2<br />

Elementary Japanese II<br />

5 UNITS - (UC: CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Japanese 1 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Completes elementary Japanese I.<br />

Continues to teach fundamentals of pronunciation and grammar. 100<br />

additional Chinese characters will be introduced. Continues to introduce<br />

Japanese geography, customs and culture of Japan.<br />

JAPANESE 3<br />

Intermediate Japanese I<br />

5 UNITS - (UC: CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Japanese 2 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Continues the study of grammar and vocabulary building for conversational<br />

fluency and written composition. Begins the study of short narrative writings.<br />

Intermediate Japanese II<br />

5 UNITS - (UC: CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Japanese 3 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Completes the study of fundamental grammar and provides additional<br />

training in grammar, written composition, and the use of idioms. Greater<br />

emphasis is placed on the knowledge and use of Kanji. Continues the<br />

reading of short narrative stories.<br />

JAPANESE 8<br />

Conversational Japanese<br />

2 UNITS – (RPT 3) (UC: CSU)<br />

Prerequisite: Japanese 2 with a satisfactory grade or equivalent.<br />

Opportunities for practical conversation on everyday topics, current events,<br />

and cultural material. UC Maximum credit: 2 courses (4 units).<br />

JAPANESE 21<br />

Fundamentals of Japanese I<br />

This course is designed to provide the basic knowledge of Japanese for<br />

beginners with no preparation. Basic sentence structures and vocabulary<br />

are introduced. Basic writing system (Hiragana) will also be introduced.<br />

JAPANESE 22<br />

Fundamentals of Japanese II<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

This course continues the basic knowledge of Japanese grammar at the<br />

second level of the Japanese language for beginners. Second level of writing<br />

system and 50 Chinese characters will also be introduced. UC Limit:<br />

Japanese 21 and 22 combined equals Japanese 1; maximum credit 5 units;<br />

both must be taken for credit to be granted.<br />

KOREAN<br />

One year of high school study in Korean corresponds to one college semester<br />

or one semester of college Korean equals one full year of high school<br />

study.<br />

KOREAN 1<br />

Advisory: English 28/31 or equivalent.<br />

Fundamentals of pronunciation and grammar, basic vocabulary, useful<br />

phrases; develops the ability to understand, read, write and speak simple<br />

Korean. The course includes basic facts on the geography, customs and<br />

cultures of Korea.<br />

Completes the elementary Korean grammar; includes the reading of elementary<br />
