NOTE: Not every class is offered each semester. Refer to the current class<br />
schedule for current class offerings.<br />
PREREQUISITES: Specified prerequisites must be completed with a satisfactory<br />
grade or equivalent.<br />
Registration takes place in the Learning Skills Center during the first fourteen<br />
weeks of the semester. Students will be placed at the appropriate language<br />
arts and/or mathematics level based on a diagnostic assessment in<br />
the following course offerings.<br />
All Learning Skills courses are offered on a Credit/No Credit basis.<br />
LEARNING SKILLS 1<br />
Reading Comprehension<br />
3 UNITS - (RPT 3) NDC<br />
Individualized reading instruction for English as a Native Language (ENL)<br />
and English as a Second Language (ESL) students from beginning to advanced<br />
college level. Students will progress from reading sentences and<br />
paragraphs to short selections and excerpts from novels. Strategies are<br />
employed to help students with comprehension skills and vocabulary development.<br />
Depending upon the diagnostic assessment, students will be placed<br />
in an appropriate reading program. Students may enroll through the twelfth<br />
week of the semester. This course is open to all students. Grades are on a<br />
credit/no-credit basis.<br />
LEARNING SKILLS 2<br />
English Fundamentals<br />
3 UNITS – (RPT 3)<br />
This course is a review of beginning to advanced grammar. It is designed to<br />
cover the basic structure of the sentence, parts of speech, phrases, clauses,<br />
and agreement; using verbs, pronouns, and modifiers correctly; punctuation,<br />
clear reference, a glossary of usage, and capital letters. Depending<br />
upon the diagnostic assessment, students will be placed in an appropriate<br />
grammar program. Students may enroll through the twelfth week of the<br />
semester. This course is open to all students. Grades are on a credit/nocredit<br />
basis.<br />

LEARNING SKILLS 3<br />
Vocabulary Development<br />
5 UNITS - NDC<br />
Learning Skills 03A, 03B, and 03C are small group conversation classes<br />
designed to provide ESL students with class activities that will expand their<br />
comprehension and use of spoken English. Through the use of role-playing,<br />
practice dialogues, and impromptu speaking exercises, students are given<br />
the opportunity to improve their oral communication skills in a small group<br />
setting. Learning Skills 03D is an individualized, self-paced vocabulary<br />
program designed on various levels of difficulty. This course focuses on<br />
continued vocabulary growth and development, as well as provides students<br />
with helpful strategies for understanding complex vocabulary words. Learning<br />
Skills03E-Occupational Vocabulary-is a specially designed course for<br />
students enrolled in the Child Development or Nutrition curricula. A placement<br />
test will be given to all students. Students may enroll through the fourteenth<br />
week of the semester.<br />
LEARNING SKILLS 4<br />
The Mechanics of Spelling<br />
1 UNIT - (RPT 3) NDC<br />
LS4 is an intensive spelling course designed for non-spellers. Emphasis is<br />
placed upon the use of a phonics, focusing on additive doubling, ie or ei,<br />
finding silent e, pronunciation aids, tricky endings, words often confused,<br />
plurals, capitals, apostrophes, and basic principles. Depending upon the<br />
diagnostic assessment, students will be placed in an appropriate program.<br />
Students may enroll through the twelfth week of the semester. This course<br />
is open to all students. Grades are on a credit/no-credit basis.<br />
LEARNING SKILLS 6<br />
Academic Study Skills<br />
3 UNITS - NDC<br />
This course will introduce students to academic study skills. Students will<br />
be introduced to making transitions to higher learning, first steps to selfdiscovery,<br />
time management, discovering how to learn, memorization,<br />
reading, note taking, test-taking strategies, critical thinking, communicating<br />
diversity, computer technology, health awareness, and career planning.<br />
Depending upon the diagnostic assessment, students will be placed in an<br />
appropriate study skills program. Students may enroll through the twelfth<br />
week of the semester. This course is open to all students. Grades are on a<br />
credit/no-credit basis.<br />
LEARNING SKILLS 7<br />
Basic Composition<br />
3 UNITS – (RPT 3)<br />
This course offers beginning to advanced writing instruction. Learning<br />
Skills 7 focuses upon basic sentence structures, paragraph development<br />
and essay organization. Depending upon the diagnostic assessment,<br />
students will be placed in an appropriate writing program. Students<br />
may enroll through the twelfth week of the semester. This course<br />
is open to all students. Grades are on a credit/no-credit basis.<br />
LEARNING SKILLS 8<br />
Résumé Preparation and Job Search Skills<br />
1 UNITS - (RPT 3) NDC<br />
This course teaches how to write a resume and cover letter. In addition, job<br />
search techniques and job interview skills are explored. Depending upon<br />
the diagnostic assessment, students will be placed in an appropriate program.<br />
Students may enroll through the twelfth week of the semester. This<br />
course is open to all students. Grades are on a credit/no-credit basis.
