RESOLUTION HONORING ETHEL PESIN c<br />

ON THE OCCASION AND CELEBRATION OF HER 95TH BIRTHDA<br />

Council as a whole, offered and moved adoption of <strong>the</strong> following resolution:<br />

WHEREAS, E<strong>the</strong>l Pesin was born on January 16, 1915. Her family moved <strong>to</strong> 499 <strong>Jersey</strong> Avenue in<br />

<strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong> when she was 8 years old. Her parents had left Riga, Latvia <strong>to</strong> escape Czarist<br />

persecution and left South Carolina because of <strong>the</strong> prejudice <strong>to</strong>ward African-Americans. E<strong>the</strong>l<br />

would follow her parents' example and yearned for a more just and compassionate world; and<br />

WHEREAS, E<strong>the</strong>l Pesin attended Public Schools #3 and #9. She continued her education at<br />

Dickinson High School and earned a Music Degree in 1935 from Syracuse University. E<strong>the</strong>l served<br />

<strong>the</strong> youth of <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong> as a music teacher at Snyder Junior High School and Lincoln High SchooL.<br />

She also taught private piano lessons; and<br />

WHEREAS, E<strong>the</strong>l Pesin married <strong>the</strong> late Morris Pesin in 1938. Morris Pesin served as a <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong><br />

Councilman from 1969 <strong>to</strong> 1976 and is known as <strong>the</strong> "fa<strong>the</strong>r" of Liberty State Park. The Pesins<br />

raised two children. Sam is a preschool teacher and president of The Friends of Liberty State Park<br />

(LSP), and Judy is a bank vice-president who just earned a Masters Degree in Social Work. Mrs.<br />

Pesin is <strong>the</strong> beloved mo<strong>the</strong>r-in-law of Lou Borriello, grandmo<strong>the</strong>r of Dara and Daniel and great<br />

grandmo<strong>the</strong>r of Joseph; and<br />

WHEREAS, Morris and E<strong>the</strong>l Pesin and her parents, Louis and Dora Pliskin owned a dry goods s<strong>to</strong>re.<br />

in <strong>the</strong> down<strong>to</strong>wn section of <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong> at Brunswick and Wayne Streets. They also operated<br />

Pesin's, a children's clothing s<strong>to</strong>re located at McGinley Square from 1948 <strong>to</strong> 1974; and<br />

WHEREAS, E<strong>the</strong>l Pesin has dedicated <strong>to</strong> her life <strong>to</strong> her family and community. She is a passionate<br />

advocate of her husband's vision of Liberty State Park as a free open space urban park. Mrs. Pesin<br />

served on <strong>the</strong> park's now defunct Public Advisory Commission and is an honorary trustee and<br />

volunteer of The Friends of LSP; and<br />

WHEREAS, E<strong>the</strong>l Pesin was active with <strong>the</strong> Hudson County Citizens Committee in <strong>the</strong> 1960's. She<br />

played <strong>the</strong> piano at Academy House, a center for people recovering from mental illness and<br />

delivered Meals on Wheels for <strong>the</strong> Jewish Family and Counseling Service of <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong>, Bayonne<br />

and Hoboken. She served one term as president of<strong>the</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong> State Teachers College (NJCU)<br />

Community Orchestra and served on <strong>the</strong> condominium board where she resides; and<br />

WHEREAS, E<strong>the</strong>l Pesin wil celebrate her 95th birthday on January 16, <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that <strong>the</strong> Municipal Council of <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> of <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong> does<br />

hereby honor E<strong>the</strong>l Pesin. She is a role model and inspiration <strong>to</strong> alL. We wish her continued health<br />

and happiness on <strong>the</strong> occasion and celebration of her 95th birthday.<br />
