RESOLUTION HONORING ETHEL PESIN c
ON THE OCCASION AND CELEBRATION OF HER 95TH BIRTHDA
Council as a whole, offered and moved adoption of the following resolution:
WHEREAS, Ethel Pesin was born on January 16, 1915. Her family moved to 499 Jersey Avenue in
Jersey City when she was 8 years old. Her parents had left Riga, Latvia to escape Czarist
persecution and left South Carolina because of the prejudice toward African-Americans. Ethel
would follow her parents' example and yearned for a more just and compassionate world; and
WHEREAS, Ethel Pesin attended Public Schools #3 and #9. She continued her education at
Dickinson High School and earned a Music Degree in 1935 from Syracuse University. Ethel served
the youth of Jersey City as a music teacher at Snyder Junior High School and Lincoln High SchooL.
She also taught private piano lessons; and
WHEREAS, Ethel Pesin married the late Morris Pesin in 1938. Morris Pesin served as a Jersey City
Councilman from 1969 to 1976 and is known as the "father" of Liberty State Park. The Pesins
raised two children. Sam is a preschool teacher and president of The Friends of Liberty State Park
(LSP), and Judy is a bank vice-president who just earned a Masters Degree in Social Work. Mrs.
Pesin is the beloved mother-in-law of Lou Borriello, grandmother of Dara and Daniel and great
grandmother of Joseph; and
WHEREAS, Morris and Ethel Pesin and her parents, Louis and Dora Pliskin owned a dry goods store.
in the downtown section of Jersey City at Brunswick and Wayne Streets. They also operated
Pesin's, a children's clothing store located at McGinley Square from 1948 to 1974; and
WHEREAS, Ethel Pesin has dedicated to her life to her family and community. She is a passionate
advocate of her husband's vision of Liberty State Park as a free open space urban park. Mrs. Pesin
served on the park's now defunct Public Advisory Commission and is an honorary trustee and
volunteer of The Friends of LSP; and
WHEREAS, Ethel Pesin was active with the Hudson County Citizens Committee in the 1960's. She
played the piano at Academy House, a center for people recovering from mental illness and
delivered Meals on Wheels for the Jewish Family and Counseling Service of Jersey City, Bayonne
and Hoboken. She served one term as president ofthe Jersey City State Teachers College (NJCU)
Community Orchestra and served on the condominium board where she resides; and
WHEREAS, Ethel Pesin wil celebrate her 95th birthday on January 16, 2010.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Municipal Council of the City of Jersey City does
hereby honor Ethel Pesin. She is a role model and inspiration to alL. We wish her continued health
and happiness on the occasion and celebration of her 95th birthday.
