There are two present subjunctives of the verb bûn ‘to be, become,’ <strong>with</strong><br />
and <strong>with</strong>out the subjunctive marker bi-. The conjugation <strong>with</strong>out the marker<br />
is used when the verb means ‘be’; the conjugation <strong>with</strong> the marker is used<br />
when the verb means ‘become’ and when it is part of a compound verb.<br />
‘BE’ ‘BECOME’<br />
ez bim em bin ez bíbim em bíbin<br />
tu bî hun bin tu bíbî hun bíbin<br />
ew be ew bin ew bíbe ew bíbin<br />
In the negative the distinction between ‘be’ and ‘become’ is lost, and there<br />
is only one negative present subjunctive.<br />
ez nébim em nébin<br />
tu nébî hun nébin<br />
ew nébe ew nébin<br />
There are two present subjunctives of hatin ‘to come.’ One is regularly<br />
conjugated based on the stem wer- <strong>with</strong>out the bi- prefix; the other is regularly<br />
conjugated based on the stem bê-, a contraction of bi- and yê-, the<br />
present stem of hatin.<br />
