As noted in Chapter 2, probate data is biased; richer inhabit<strong>an</strong>ts are more likely <strong>to</strong><br />

be included th<strong>an</strong> labourers or poor craftsmen. However, in the absence of less biased<br />

sources before Period D, it at least allows a comparison between zones <strong>an</strong>d periods. 9<br />

As<br />

may be expected, probate suggests that the workforce hereabouts is made up quite<br />

differently from that of Alcester. More th<strong>an</strong> seventy percent of males in probate worked<br />

in the primary sec<strong>to</strong>r in Periods A <strong>an</strong>d B, though this fell later. The secondary sec<strong>to</strong>r<br />

grew with a noticeable rise in Period C, while tertiary grew steadily throughout. 10<br />
