As for reasons of convenience I only <strong>an</strong>alysed certain years in marriage licences,<br />

the <strong>to</strong>tal sample is only half the number of the probate sample. Maybe for that reason<br />

Table 8.3 does not show such a steady pattern as that in probate, but it may be that, with<br />

gaps between the sampled year groups, this table is more sensitive <strong>to</strong> short-lived trends,<br />

perhaps showing a swing back <strong>to</strong>wards agriculture between Periods B <strong>an</strong>d C.<br />
