Warks. in twentieth century). Stratford Union. Alcester 8, Bidford 4, Chipping Campden 6,<br />

Stratford 6. ‘Flat vale country, yet the greater part of the parish is arable l<strong>an</strong>d’. Great<br />

scarcity of water in summer. The m<strong>an</strong>or was held by the Sheldon family (see Beoley).<br />

Mainly agricultural, chiefly arable, but some weavers (established pre-1608) <strong>an</strong>d other<br />

crafts. Enclosure 1774.<br />

Pebworth - a parish of 3086 acres including Broad Mars<strong>to</strong>n <strong>an</strong>d Ulling<strong>to</strong>n; Campden<br />

de<strong>an</strong>ery, Gloucester diocese; Upper Division of Kiftsgate Hundred, Gloucestershire<br />

(tr<strong>an</strong>sferred <strong>to</strong> Worcestershire in the twentieth century). Evesham Union. Alcester 7,<br />

Bidford 3, Stratford 8, Chipping Campden 5, Evesham 7, Broadway 7. Rich soil with fine<br />

grass <strong>an</strong>d corn ‘pretty equally divided in<strong>to</strong> pasture <strong>an</strong>d arable’. The main m<strong>an</strong>or of<br />

Pebworth belonged <strong>to</strong> the Fortescue family. Another m<strong>an</strong>or was held by the Martin family<br />

with a depend<strong>an</strong>ce on the Duchy of L<strong>an</strong>caster, the inhabit<strong>an</strong>ts therefore claiming <strong>to</strong> be <strong>to</strong>llfree<br />

throughout the kingdom. The m<strong>an</strong>or of Broadmars<strong>to</strong>n was held by the earls of<br />

Salisbury. Enclosure award 1814.<br />
