The 1841 census has lower figures for adult males in primary <strong>an</strong>d higher for those<br />

in secondary when compared with baptisms for 1813-1840. This may indicate that the<br />

swing away from primary was intensifying circa 1840. Tertiary is also higher in the<br />

census th<strong>an</strong> in baptisms, perhaps partly explained by unmarried males in their twenties<br />

working as domestic serv<strong>an</strong>ts. Table 6.7 also shows the role of women <strong>an</strong>d those under<br />

20, though the <strong>to</strong>tals in these columns suggest much under-recording in these gender <strong>an</strong>d<br />

age groups when compared with adult males. 19<br />
