Table 5.8 confirms the continuing growth in the secondary <strong>an</strong>d tertiary sec<strong>to</strong>rs. In<br />

the 1841 census agricultural labourers comprise some 53% of the adult male workforce<br />

compared with 64.9% in baptisms between 1813 <strong>an</strong>d 1840. The tertiary sec<strong>to</strong>r among<br />

adult males is boosted with a sizeable share of domestic serv<strong>an</strong>ts when compared with the<br />

baptism records. Although over 20 years of age perhaps m<strong>an</strong>y of these serv<strong>an</strong>ts were<br />

unmarried <strong>an</strong>d therefore do not appear in the baptism registers. As expected, domestic<br />

serv<strong>an</strong>ts are predomin<strong>an</strong>t in the recorded occupations of females (especially those under<br />

20) <strong>an</strong>d younger males in the census.<br />
