M<strong>an</strong>y alternative occupations arose because the individual had the right contacts <strong>an</strong>d<br />

knowledge, so the fish-hookmaker moved in<strong>to</strong> fishing tackle m<strong>an</strong>ufacture, while the<br />

carrier’s family also kept the village-shop. The miller often doubled as baker or maltster<br />

<strong>an</strong>d also dealt in corn <strong>an</strong>d flour.<br />

Other occupational ch<strong>an</strong>ges are age-related. An individual perhaps ch<strong>an</strong>ged career,<br />

for example a needlemaker joined the army <strong>an</strong>d then returned <strong>to</strong> needlemaking. Others<br />

built up capital which enabled them <strong>to</strong> buy a farm or a pub in middle age, either leaving off<br />

or continuing their earlier occupation. The descrip<strong>to</strong>r ‘apprentice’ was naturally associated<br />

with those in the age-r<strong>an</strong>ge 12 <strong>to</strong> 21 <strong>an</strong>d ‘serv<strong>an</strong>ts’ were also more likely <strong>to</strong> be under 30.<br />

Other terms in the Vic<strong>to</strong>ri<strong>an</strong> censuses such as ‘err<strong>an</strong>d-boy’ also show individuals at the<br />

start of their working life, while ‘wheel-turners’ (presumably in the needle fac<strong>to</strong>ries) tend<br />

<strong>to</strong> be under 20 or elderly. Needle District mythology relates that needle-pointers died<br />

young. Before the introduction of extrac<strong>to</strong>r f<strong>an</strong>s <strong>to</strong> remove metal dust, m<strong>an</strong>y must have<br />

died from respira<strong>to</strong>ry diseases, but there are examples of older needle-pointers <strong>to</strong>o. 13<br />

However, old age, ill-health <strong>an</strong>d accidents no doubt caused m<strong>an</strong>y people <strong>to</strong> ch<strong>an</strong>ge their<br />

job.<br />

Perhaps by Adam Smith’s time the society of Alcester’s hinterl<strong>an</strong>d had not<br />

‘improved’ as much as Smith would have liked. M<strong>an</strong>y m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers, retailers <strong>an</strong>d<br />

professionals were still involved in farming, whether as labourer, h<strong>an</strong>ds-on farmer or<br />

inves<strong>to</strong>r, as shown by probate inven<strong>to</strong>ries up <strong>to</strong> Smith’s time. Unfortunately, when<br />
