Appendix 22: Multiple occupations<br />

This appendix lists combinations of male occupations noted in the Study Area.<br />

Some occupations are very closely associated such as plumbers, glaziers <strong>an</strong>d painters<br />

or carpenters <strong>an</strong>d joiners, others are less obvious combinations. Farming <strong>an</strong>d<br />

labouring, which went h<strong>an</strong>d in h<strong>an</strong>d with m<strong>an</strong>y occupations, are not included here.<br />

Domestic serv<strong>an</strong>ts, soldiers <strong>an</strong>d gentlemen are also excluded from the list. There has<br />

been no attempt <strong>to</strong> qu<strong>an</strong>tify the frequency with which a certain combination occurs,<br />

though some are very frequent <strong>an</strong>d others are rare or occur only once.<br />

The occupations in bold type are shown below in my groupings (as discussed<br />

in Appendix 2). It will be seen that m<strong>an</strong>y combinations of occupations are from<br />

within the grouping, but there are also m<strong>an</strong>y examples of combinations of quite<br />

different trades.<br />
