Figure 13 shows the level <strong>of</strong> cultivation <strong>in</strong> Laikipia district with trees be<strong>in</strong>g planted ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

around the homesteads while farms rema<strong>in</strong> without any trees.<br />

It is evident from Table 6 that productivity has been dropp<strong>in</strong>g more on larger farms than<br />

smaller ones. One would observe that cells for larger farms have mostly been experienc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

productivity decl<strong>in</strong>es with very few <strong>of</strong> them register<strong>in</strong>g productivity <strong>in</strong>creases. Farmers<br />

who reported <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> land productivity were ma<strong>in</strong>ly those with smaller farms. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

confirmed hav<strong>in</strong>g kept productivity stable through use <strong>of</strong> fertilizer and manure.<br />

4.1.12 Education<br />

Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between education and both use <strong>of</strong><br />

improved farm <strong>in</strong>puts and land productivity. Correlation coefficient showed that educated<br />

farmers are more likely to use fertilizer and certified seed than their less educated<br />

counterparts (Annex 1). Similar results were derived from Cross-tab analysis. Table 7
