<strong>The</strong> number <strong>of</strong> cases handled by the workers was significantly <strong>in</strong>fluenced by the<br />

number <strong>of</strong> refresher courses attended and also by whether the worker keeps records or not.<br />

All other hypothesized <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g factors (bus<strong>in</strong>ess skills tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>come, gender, and<br />

distance to drug shop) were not significant.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se results <strong>in</strong>dicate that the CBAHWs who kept records could handle about 98 cases<br />

per year more than those who did not, .other th<strong>in</strong>gs beg<strong>in</strong> equal. In addition, an extra<br />

refresher course undertaken could <strong>in</strong>crease the level <strong>of</strong> activity by up to 25 more cases per<br />

year. <strong>The</strong>se f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs show that cont<strong>in</strong>ual pr<strong>of</strong>essional development through refresher courses<br />

and commitment to work <strong>in</strong>dicated by keep<strong>in</strong>g records are important factors <strong>in</strong> determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

the success <strong>of</strong> the community-based animal health workers model.<br />

4.5 Factors determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> the activities <strong>of</strong> CBAHWs<br />

A logistic regression was used to analyze the effects <strong>of</strong> personal characteristics,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicators <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>come, and competition on the likelihood <strong>of</strong> a CBAHW’s rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> active<br />

practice (equation 2). <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent variables <strong>in</strong>cluded annual <strong>in</strong>come from other<br />

activities, distance to veter<strong>in</strong>ary drug shop, years <strong>of</strong> farm<strong>in</strong>g experience, number <strong>of</strong> refresher<br />

courses attended, possession <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess skills as a dummy variable (dummy = 1 if tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess skills and 0 for none), and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> practice records (dummy = 1 for keep<strong>in</strong>g<br />

records and 0 for none). Age <strong>of</strong> the CBAHW and distance to a tra<strong>in</strong>ed veter<strong>in</strong>arian were not<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded because <strong>of</strong> their high correlation with years <strong>of</strong> farm<strong>in</strong>g experience and distance to<br />

veter<strong>in</strong>ary drug shop respectively. <strong>The</strong> results are given <strong>in</strong> Table 10.
