3.3.2 Storage Facilities<br />

This study seeks to establish the reasons why traders store maize, where they store their<br />

maize, and the storage problems that they face.<br />

In the maize-surplus districts the storage function is meant to assemble maize <strong>in</strong>to large<br />

quantities (bulk build<strong>in</strong>g), whereas <strong>in</strong> the maize-deficit districts traders store maize for bulk<br />

break<strong>in</strong>g. Traders <strong>in</strong>terviewed revealed that the ma<strong>in</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> storage is to stock maize <strong>in</strong><br />

anticipation <strong>of</strong> price <strong>in</strong>creases (Table 14).<br />
