Through focus group discussions, qualitative data were collected from 10 randomly selected<br />

sites or beaches along the shores <strong>of</strong> Lake Malombe and the southeast arm <strong>of</strong> Lake Malawi.<br />

<strong>The</strong> sites <strong>in</strong>cluded Chizumbi, Mtanga, Ntenje, Chimwala, Likulungwa, and Sili along Lake<br />

Malombe and Kadango, Ng’ombe, Nkali, and Kela/Makawa on the southeast arm <strong>of</strong> Lake<br />

Malawi (Figure 3). <strong>The</strong>se communities <strong>in</strong>cluded those belong<strong>in</strong>g to community <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

Focus group discussions (FDGs) for people belong<strong>in</strong>g to BVCs were conducted separately<br />

from FDGs for other <strong>in</strong>stitutions so that they could provide an <strong>in</strong>dependent perspective on<br />

BVCs and the chambo fishery. Other <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong>cluded health and natural resources<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions. A total <strong>of</strong> 163 people (107 men and 56 women) were <strong>in</strong>terviewed (Table 1).<br />

Guidel<strong>in</strong>es were used to help <strong>in</strong>terviewers keep track <strong>of</strong> the discussion. Flip charts, pencils,<br />

and markers were used to help people expla<strong>in</strong> their ideas when verbal communication was<br />

difficult. Us<strong>in</strong>g these materials, people were able to illustrate historical trends such as<br />

changes <strong>in</strong> shorel<strong>in</strong>e vegetation and fish catches.
