Several CBAHWs programmes have been established and docyumented <strong>in</strong> Kenya which<br />

provided a wide range <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation on their operations.<br />

1.3 Area <strong>of</strong> study<br />

<strong>The</strong> CBAHWs studied are based <strong>in</strong> Mtito Andei division, one <strong>of</strong> the 14 divisions <strong>in</strong><br />

Makueni district, which lies approximately midway on the Mombasa -Nairobi road<br />

(Figure 1). <strong>The</strong> region is semi-arid and is covered with dense shrub vegetation. Farmers<br />

practice ra<strong>in</strong>-fed agriculture and keep vary<strong>in</strong>g sizes <strong>of</strong> flocks <strong>of</strong> sheep and herds <strong>of</strong> goats<br />

and cattle. This area borders the Tsavo National Park and suffers from a high level <strong>of</strong><br />

tick-borne disease and trypanosomiasis transmitted from the park by ticks and tsetse flies<br />

respectively.<br />

Makueni district is one <strong>of</strong> the 12 districts <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Eastern</strong> Prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Kenya<br />

cover<strong>in</strong>g an area <strong>of</strong> 7,440 square kilometers. It is divided <strong>in</strong>to 14 adm<strong>in</strong>istrative divisions<br />

and 52 locations. It is generally low ly<strong>in</strong>g and rises <strong>in</strong> altitude from 600meters at Tsavo<br />

<strong>in</strong> the east to about 1,900 meters <strong>in</strong> the Kilungu hills <strong>in</strong> the west. A large part <strong>of</strong> this<br />

district is <strong>of</strong> low agricultural potential. Major livestock products, <strong>in</strong> order <strong>of</strong> economic<br />

importance, are beef, hides and sk<strong>in</strong>s, goat and sheep meat, honey, chicken, and eggs.<br />

Crop farm<strong>in</strong>g is ma<strong>in</strong>ly for subsistence purposes. <strong>The</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> crops grown <strong>in</strong> the area are<br />

maize, pigeon peas, and cowpeas. Irrigated horticultural farm<strong>in</strong>g also takes place <strong>in</strong><br />

smallhold<strong>in</strong>gs along some rivers. <strong>The</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> cash crops <strong>in</strong>clude c<strong>of</strong>fee and cotton and are<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly found <strong>in</strong> the high-potential parts <strong>of</strong> the district.<br />

Several organizations have been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> development programs <strong>in</strong> the district <strong>in</strong> the<br />

past. <strong>The</strong>se programs have <strong>in</strong>cluded education, crop and livestock production, livestock<br />

health, forestry, water, human health, credit, and <strong>in</strong>frastructure development. Some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

programs that have targeted livestock production <strong>in</strong>clude the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• German Agro-Action (GAA), an agricultural project <strong>in</strong>itiated under GTZ <strong>in</strong> 1995<br />

cover<strong>in</strong>g Kibwezi, Mak<strong>in</strong>du, Mtito Andei, and Nguu divisions. Among other<br />

objectives, the project focused on livestock production <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the promotion <strong>of</strong><br />

improved production practices, upgrad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> livestock, and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> farmers. It was<br />

also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g CBAHWs for management <strong>of</strong> livestock health.<br />

• Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) program that focused on<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the community on animal health and control <strong>of</strong> animal diseases and their<br />

vectors, among other issues. <strong>The</strong> program started <strong>in</strong> 1994 <strong>in</strong> Mtito Andei division and<br />

has been <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g CBAHWs.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Nairobi and Government <strong>of</strong> Kenya community-based animal<br />

health care project <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong> 1996 <strong>in</strong> Kibwezi division.
