It appears that the perception <strong>of</strong> communal trust and honesty is more pronounced <strong>in</strong><br />

Machakos than <strong>in</strong> Taita-Taveta (Table 4.7). In Machakos, about 88 percent <strong>of</strong> the respondents<br />

agree or strongly agree that people are honest and trustworthy, compared with 69 percent <strong>in</strong><br />

Taita-Taveta. When the respondents compare their villagers’ members’ trustworth<strong>in</strong>ess to<br />

those from other villages, their perception becomes muted <strong>in</strong> both sites. Sixty percent <strong>of</strong><br />

Machakos respondents agree or strongly agree that people <strong>in</strong> their village are more<br />

trustworthy than people <strong>in</strong> other villages. In Taita-Taveta, this figure is about 44 percent. In
